Presentation transcript:

 Sports now a days everyone is looking for an edge. Take the steroid era of Barry Bonds, Mark Maguire, and Sammy Sosa. To the more recent adderall binge by Carlos Ruiz and NFL players around the League.  We wanted to see how Dietary supplements effect all the way to the College ranks.  Mental and physical effects not just in males but females too.

 Dietary supplements are used additionally to food.  The aim of using dietary supplements is to allow athletes to train harder, improve performance, and recover more quickly according to an article by Human Kinetics Inc.  Although this article may not support dietary supplement intake, it surveys why the athletes are consuming them.  It discusses that the athletes believe dietary supplements help improve performance and mental awareness and also prevent illness and injuries.

 The purpose of doing this research is to:  1. Find out if college athletes take dietary supplements.  2. Find out if dietary supplements effect mental awareness.  3. Find out if dietary supplements play a role in the college athletes life.

 Do you take supplements? If so, why? If not, why?  If so, how often do you take supplements? Once a day? Once a month? Ect.  What kind of supplements do you take? Protein, creatine, vitamins, minerals, caffeine? Ect.  Do supplements effect your mental awareness? Yes or No.  Do you feel more aware or less aware after taking a supplement/s?  Does it not effect your awareness at all?  Do supplements make you play better? Yes or No.  Do you find it easier to wake up in the morning if you take supplements? Or if you do not take supplements?  Do you feel you have more energy while on supplements? Or not on supplements?

 Subjects: Consisted of Rowan athletic participants randomly chosen.  Instrumentation: The survey questions were designed to capture the multiple leading reasons to why Rowan athletes consume dietary supplements.  Procedure: Athletes were chosen via rowan athletic website randomly. All information was confidential.

 For qualitiative results we asked questions that could be answered differently by each individual person. For the question:  1. Do you take supplements, why or why not? Most of the males responded with “yes because of the pressure of performing.” Most of the females responded with “no because they do not know much about them.”  2. How often do you take supplements? Most males responded with “once a day.” Most females responded with “never.”  3. What kind of supplements do you take? Most males responded with “protein, creatine, vitamins, and caffeine.” Most females responded with “none.”  4. Do you feel more aware or less aware when you take supplements? Most males responded with “more aware.” Most females responded with “I do not know because I do not take them.”  5. Do you find it easier to wake up in the morning if you take supplements? Or if you do not take supplements? Most males responded with “it is easier to wake up if I take supplements.” Most females responded with “I do not know because I do not take supplements.”  6. Do you feel you have more energy while on supplements? Or not on supplements? Most males responded with “I have more energy while on supplements.” Most females responded with “I do not know because I do not take supplements.”
