Universities working together to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware. What is OpenCourseWare? An Opencourseware (OCW) is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners throughout the world. OCW is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted, no student/faculty interactions and no transcripts. OCW is a collection of high-quality learning materials presented in the form of courses. OCW materials are there for the taking and for transformation. Universities working together to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware. The OCW Story —How it Started Two Questions: How is the internet going to change education? What is MIT going to do about it? September 18, 2008 Open Sharing, Global Benefits

Universities working together to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware. The OCW Story —How it Started The Report No Business Model Mission Model: “to advance knowledge in ways that will best serve the nation and the world” Note: Everyone expected an MIT.com response, but the committee found that there was no for-profit business model for a distance-learning version of the kind of focused, hands-on education MIT has to offer. But there was an option in keeping with MIT's mission: use the internet to give away MIT materials, so that instructors and students at other universities could use them to improve their own teaching and learning. Universities working together to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware. The OCW Story —How it Started Supporting The Vision “OCW expresses MIT's goal of advancing education around the world through a global community in which knowledge and ideas are shared openly for the benefit of all.” — Susan Hockfield, President of MIT Note: Early support came from the Mellon and Hewlett Foundations, and current MIT president, Susan Hockfield, shares the enthusiasm, saying…

The OCW Story—The OCW Consortium 160+ institutions 92 live OCW sites ~5,000 courses http: ocwconsortium.org Note: And almost immediately, other institutions started following suit, whether publishing their own courses, or developing software, or defining a legal framework to support the open sharing of courses. Today, the OpenCourseWare Consortium fosters the collaboration of over 160 institutions, "working together to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware."
