Metric and Non-Metric Conversion Problems

Metric to Metric Conversions 3 Step Solution: Start with the given, in this example it’s 5 m. Use the conversion factor and make a fraction from it such that it cancels out the known unit. Cancel out numbers and units to get the unknown. Q 1) Convert 5 meters to centimeters. Conversion Factor(s): 1 m = 100 cm

You can make two fractions from the conversion factor (1m = 100cm). Our aim is to cancel out the meters and retain the Cm in the final answer. So setup the problem by using the second fraction.

Metric to Metric Conversions Solution: Q 1) Convert 5 meters to centimeters. Conversion Factor(s): 1 m = 100 cm

Metric to Metric Conversions Solution: Q 2) Convert 0.5 meters to millimeters. Conversion Factor(s): 1 m = 100 cm 1 cm = 10 mm

Metric to Metric Conversions Solution: Q 3) Convert 750 meters to kilometers. Conversion Factor(s): 1 km = 1000 m

Metric to Metric Conversions Solution: Q 4) Convert 50 milligrams to kilograms. Conversion Factor(s): 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 ft = 30 cm Mixed Conversions Q 5) Convert 175 centimeters to feet. Conversion Factor(s): 1 ft = 30 cm

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 kg = 2.2 lb Mixed Conversions Q 6) Convert 80 kilograms to pounds. Conversion Factor(s): 1 kg = 2.2 lb

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 mile = 1609 m 1 m = 1.1 yards Mixed Conversions Q 7) Convert 1mile to yards. Conversion Factor(s): 1 mile = 1609 m 1 m = 1.1 yards

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): Mixed Conversions Q 8) You paid $62 to fill a tank at $3.95 per gallon. Your car gives 28 miles/gallon. How far can you drive? Conversion Factor(s):

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 oz = 28 g 1kg = 1000 g Mixed Conversions Q 9) Convert 60 ounces to kilograms. Conversion Factor(s): 1 oz = 28 g 1kg = 1000 g

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 5 miles = 8 km Mixed Conversions Q 10) Convert 100 mph to kmph. Conversion Factor(s): 5 miles = 8 km

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 mile = 1609 m 1 h = 3600 s Mixed Conversions Q 11) Convert 100 mph to meters per second. Conversion Factor(s): 1 mile = 1609 m 1 h = 3600 s

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): 1 m = 3.3 ft 1 inch = 2.54 cm Mixed Conversions Q 12) Convert 6 feet 3 inches to meters. Conversion Factor(s): 1 m = 3.3 ft 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 m = 100 cm

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): Mixed Conversions Q 13) How many seconds are there in a day? Conversion Factor(s):

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): As usual Mixed Conversions Q 14) Calculate the number of days a person of age 16 years, 3 months, and 2 weeks has lived so far. Conversion Factor(s): As usual

Solution: Conversion Factor(s): As usual Mixed Conversions Q 15) If a persons’ heart beats 72 times per minute, how many times does his heart beat in one day? Conversion Factor(s): As usual
