Unit:G321

My project for this year was to create two magazines. For my first task I was asked to design and create a front cover and content page for a school magazine my target audience for this magazine was for the sixth years in my school, I called my magazine “Pin Striped”. For my second task I was asked to design and create a music magazine. My target audience for this magazine was generally teenagers. I named my magazine “Rock On” as I will base the magazine around the lives and music of Rock Stars. To successfully carry out my music magazine task I had to carry out a lot of research. By using the internet “Google” I was able to find a lot of examples of front covers, content pages and double page spreads. The most useful samples came form "Kerrang" and "Rock sound“ magazines. I got a lot of great ideas from researching these magazines which I used while designing my own magazine.

When designing my magazine I had to take a lot of things into consideration. It was important that I found the best fonts to use take and edit great pictures and find the right layout styles. When analysing my music magazine samples I looked for the following conventions, when making and designing my magazine I tried to include all of these but unfortunately I was not entirely successful, I do however think my magazine still turned out quite professional and if placed with other magazines would still look attractive and eye-catching.  Masthead  corner grabber  price  barcode  slogan  caption  features  columns  by-lines  images  house-style  fonts  strapline  advertising lures  competitions and quizzes

 The codes and conventions of a music magazine are that the music magazine needs to be informative and interesting. Also the music magazine should contain some exclusive news of the latest music artist, this will persuade the readers to buy the magazine. The music magazine will need to contain photos of music artists and most contain interviews with music artists. Most music magazines contain a front cover, a contents page, double page and other single pages.

 Name of Music Magazine/ Logo  Slogan of Music Magazine  Image of Music Artist  Seal of Approval  Cover Lines  Bold text as headline  Smaller photos  Bar code  Price  Date  Issue Number  Website name These are the conventions of a front cover;

These are the conventions of a contents page; Bold text at top of the page list of different page with corresponding page numbers smaller photos which may link to different articles inside the magazine Brand identity of music magazine, perhaps logo is showed on this page as well. While constructing this Music magazine I used a lot of different technologies. At the start of this task I was not familiar with using photo-shop, to try and learn more about working photo-shop I went on to YouTube and found a huge amount of links to videos of people teaching you how to use the tools given. From doing this task I also realised how beneficial having an iPod touch can be I was able to add the photo shop App which give me more tips. I was also able spend more time researching magazines as I could use the internet of my iPod instead of using computers and I was also able to get the YouTube videos up quicker as I didn’t need to wait for my computer to load. The website pbworks.com was also very beneficial, I was able to upload all my work onto the site instead of printing it out, and I was able to organize all my work into folders which made it easier for me to reach. I used a very useful site call prezie.com it aloud me to create a diagram to brain storm all my ideas I was given an unlimited amount of room which I wouldn’t of had using a word document of page.

. Another piece of technology I used was Microsoft office. I was able to use Publisher to construct flat plans, this made it easy to change aspects if I made a mistake or if I came up with new ideas. I also used Excel to construct graphs to help me with my questionnaire analysis. I also used Microsoft word to create questionnaires and brainstorm.

Throughout this task I used many different tools on Photoshop and also a site called photo box to create my final product. Below are the following tools I used TOOLS USED HDR-ISH ORTON-ISH VIGNETTE high effect difference eraser tool Resize simple emboss effect paint bucket fronts LEXOGRAPHER BLEEDING COWBOYS BROKEN GOST

I carried out many questionnaires to find out what my target audience would aspect to see in my magazine. I also carried out surveys to get an idea of what colours and what type of images would attract my target audience in. I then took all this information ant tried to include as much of it as I could in my magazine. From carrying out my surveys and questionnaires discovered that my target audience would like to read about the latest celebrity gossip and all about upcoming stars and there favourite artists and bands. This information helped me when deciding who to use for my model. I also asked questions about colours, red black and pink seemed to be very popular with my target audience so I took that into play when designing my magazine. I also asked about prices and my target audience all said they would pay no more than £3 for a magazine. This also helped me with part of my design

I used all the information that I learnt from my target audience in my magazine which hopefully show and make my magazine look attractive and interesting to my target audience. Below is my main model, she is featured in the double page spread and also was dressed up to pose as other artists that were used in my content page

When creating my magazine I tried to use all the information my target audience provided me with so my music magazine was really based around what they wanted, however by adding ideas of my own think I have widened my target audience. Originally my target audience was teenagers but I have added information about fashion and gossip and some other things that may not just interest teenagers, so I think my target audience may apply to teenagers and some of the older generation. I think the use of colour would draw more teenagers to my magazine but also if you read the magazine I have used both formal and informal language so this may appeal to older people. I also think that writing about a scandal that is happening at the minute would attract more people in and that is what my double page spread story is about “Good girl gone bad”. I feel that I have addressed my target audience needs and more so would now assume that my target audience would now vary in ages.

A media institution is an established, often-profit based organization, that deal in the creation and distribution of advertising, entertainment and information service. When we use the term institutions in Media Studies, we usually mean the people who have a role in the production of media texts. That covers a huge amount of ground, as you can imagine. A brief list might include: Companies/organisations Producers Distributors Marketing. I think BAUER MEDIA would be a media institution that may distribute my magazine-. Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognised and rewarded as being industry innovators. Bauer produces several popular music channels including…: QTV, 4Music, Kiss TV, Kerrang! TV, The Box, Magic TV, Smash Hits TV. As my magazine is a music magazine I think this would be the institution I would want to distribute my magazine,

My magazine represents groups that are into music most likely Rock music. I think most of the people who would read my magazine would be in there teens as teenagers were my target audience. My magazine is aimed at all people who are interested in music not just girls or boys Emo’s or Goths anyone with an interest in music gossip and fashion,so I think my magazine represents all social groups who have an interest in these things.

When creating my preliminary task I had very little knowledge for using the tools on photo shop. I also didn’t no a lot about the codes and conventions that magazines have. I wouldn’t say my preliminary task was awful but I also wouldn’t say that it was great either. It was very plain the pictures were not edited as well as they are in my music magazine and the fonts were also very plain. I think looking back on my first task the improvement is amazing, I have now learnt how to use photo-shop which has made making the magazine much easier and much more enjoyable, my music magazine is creative, colourful and attractive I think it is eye catching and professional looking. My school magazine on the other hand is plain and boring there is not much creativity going on and the picture doesn’t really pop of the page. i the nest few slides I will show both my preliminary task and main task, to show how much difference there is between the two.
