Facts About The People The African continent has the second largest population in the world, at about one billion people. Well over one thousand languages are spoken by the people of Africa. Some estimates put this number closer to two thousand. The largest religion in Africa is Islam, followed by Christianity. The African population is approximately 14.72% of the world's population (as of 2009). The oldest human remains ever discovered were found in Ethiopia. They are approximately 200,000 years old.

Food In Africa ( Central Africa) Many parts of Central Africa have remained true to their traditional foods, perhaps because until the 19th century, there weren't many external influences on the cuisine. Plantains (a variety of banana picked unripe and cooked as a starch) and cassavas continue to form the basis of many meals. Starchy staples are often served with meat, bean or vegetable stews. Meat from livestock can be costly and where they can, families use 'bush meat' from wild animals such as monkey, antelope and wild pigs.

African Jewellery (materials) Through out history Africans have tended to use organic materials and materials that were readily available in their region to create their jewellery. This was especially true in their early history. Later on trade with other people increased the types of materials available for jewellery making. Below is a list of some of the more common materials used by African craftsmen. Ivory Carved stone Bone Sea Shells Animal teeth Animal hair Egg shells Wood Amber Glass
