Making Centers Work BY: ANGELA SIZEMORE 3 RD GRADE TEACHER AT SHARON ELEMENTARY

Travel Logs

Reading  Based on Daily 5  Students rotate through 3 centers daily  2 days of: Teacher, Writing, Word Words, Read with Someone, Computers, and Listening  1 day of Read to Self Math  Students will rotate through 8 centers 2 times in a week.  Monday and Tuesday: DAY1: Centers 1-8  Wednesday and Thursday: DAY2: Centers 1-8

Reading Centers

Read with Someone Day 1: Scholastic News Day 2: Activity with weekly focus (main idea, context clues, etc)

Listening Day 1: Listen to basil story Day 2: Text Dependent Question related to story OR graphic organizer with focus on weekly skill.

Word Works Day 1: Sort words based on skill focus (suffixes, prefixes, contractions, etc) Day 2: Students choose activity from Tic Tac Toe board

Writing Day 1: Research a topic and work on project ( community project, idiom book, skeleton project) Day 2: Continue researching a topic and working on the project

Computers  Day 1: Study Island assignment, when assignment is complete students may work on Razzkids.  Day 2: Continue assignment from Day 1

Teacher  Students will participate in Guided Reading on a novel or book study on their level.  Students have a notebook to make lists of vocabulary words and answer text dependent questions on the book.

Math Centers

Center #1 (Teacher Center) Day 1: Teach Math objective (students have an interactive notebook that they use for taking notes) Day 2: Practice the activity taught on Day 1

Center #2 (Practice New Skill) Day 1: Students will complete workbook pages or an activity on objective taught in Center 1. Day 2: Students will complete workbook pages or an activity on objective taught in Center 1.

Center #3 (Story Problems) Day 1: Sort problems using the method of operation that will be used to solve the problem Day 2: Solve the problems sorted in Day 1

Center #4 (Computer) Day 1: Students will complete math Study Island activity OR work on VMath Day 2: Students will complete math Study Island activity OR work on VMath

Center #5 (graphing) Day 1: Students will survey students in the class to gather data. Day 2: Students will use the data to make a graph and answer questions about the graph.

Center #6 (Laptops: Moby Max) Day 1: Students will complete lesson and activity on Moby Max Day 2: Students will complete lesson and activity on Moby Max

Center #7 (Review Center) Day 1: Activity to review skill that has been taught Day 2: Activity to review skill that has been taught

Center #8 (Game Center) Day 1: Students play a game on Mimio or a board game to review skill that has been taught. Day 2: Students play a game on Mimio or a board game to review skill that has been taught.
