Kinds of Clauses

I can identify independent and subordinate clauses. I can correctly use independent and subordinate clauses in sentences.

Clause: word group that contains a verb and its subject; used as a sentence or part of a sentence Independent Clause: expresses a complete thought; can stand alone Subordinate (Dependent) Clause: does not make sense by itself

Not a Clause:I enjoy writing in purple ink. *does not have subject and verb* Independent Clause: I write when I am angry or confused. *has subject & verb; can stand alone* Subordinate Clause: I write when I am angry or confused. *has subject & verb; cannot stand alone*

Underline the independent clause(s) in each sentence. 1.Sheldon opened a can of pizza dough, and then he spread the dough in a pan. 2.He used a nonstick pan because he wanted cleanup to be easy.

Identify the underlined word group by writing above it I for independent clause or NI for not an independent clause. 1.Since I met you, I’ve become more interested in baseball. 2.I would like to go to the mall, which is down the road.

Identify the underlined clause in each sentence by writing above it SUB for subordinate clause or IND for independent clause. 1.Acupuncture, which is my research topic, is a Chinese medical technique. 2.I have an acupuncture appointment after I have my teeth cleaned.

Underline the subordinate clause in each sentence. 1.I studied the philosophy of yin-yang because it emphasizes balance. 2.According to ancient belief, the yin and the yang are two forces that make up all aspects of life.

On the lines, add independent clauses to the following dependent clauses to express complete thoughts. Make sure each sentence begins with a capital letter and has end punctuation. 1.after we left the pizza parlor _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ 2.that caused the accident _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________
