Cynthia Hatch, NBCT, and Jenny Watson, CFCS, CFLE Southeast Middle School Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools
Workshop Objectives 1. Share tools to start the school year off right, teaching not only expectations and procedures but helping students learn what your class will really be like 2. Introducing your students to The Ultimate Leadership Experience - FCCLA 3. A couple of random things a really um….. What an experienced teacher has learned this year….. 4. A new twist on an old standard sewing project 5. A fun game for review that suits the middle schooler’s kind and gentle personality
Ice Breaker Good because this technique is transferable to all kinds of activities The teacher has control over who the kids are working with but the kids think they do! Hand out what ever activity card you are using. Have kids move around room and touch three table then walk up to closed person, trade cards turn back to back and take 4 paces, find closest person and discuss card. Or what ever movement you chose. You are in control of who the kids wind up talking to but covertly!
First Day of School Ideas One great one- Rules and Procedures Treasure Hunt Good because: Kids are up moving around Working cooperatively Actively engaged in their own learning
Second idea, well, depends on the clientele. Big surprise, right? A Play on “Who’s Got” Good because – all the same reasons as the first game but Bad because it is easier for kids to just not pay attention and when that happens it’s a bust Kids have got to read their cards loudly enough to be heard More difficult for EC and Limited English students to do independently If you have focused kids this is also a great activity
address personal, work, and societal issues through individual and chapter projects expand leadership potential develop necessary skills for success in school, home, work, and community such as goal setting, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication
Enrich learning and improve self-esteem Revitalize teaching and learning Reduce scheduling conflicts Increase opportunities for applied learning Teach critical thinking, problem-solving, and encourage civic engagement
FCCLA provides FACS students with opportunities for leadership training and development, community involvement, and personal growth. Complement classroom learning and encourage chapter members to have ownership over meaningful classroom learning experiences.

Randomness, I think that’s a word, right? Glue sponges Really bad idea for my students Easy breezy machine sewing or hand sewing project using scraps of fabric.
Grudgeball Good because kids love it. It appeals to their sense of meanness and their sense of fair play. Find rules on Google or Pinterest. Quick to make new game from any objectives you are teaching Free Play can continue for as many classes as you wish It’s fun!
