International Maritime Organization (IMO)  IMO – a United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for:  the safety and security of shipping  the prevention of marine pollution by ships

IMO’s Primary Purpose  Develop and maintain a regulatory framework (general rules) for shipping that include:  safety  environmental concerns  legal matters  technical co-operation  maritime security and  efficiency of shipping

IMO History  United Nations (UN) agency established in 1948 as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO)  Met for the first time in 1958  The name was changed to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1982  HQ is in London, UK

IMO Membership  171 Member States  Sign a treaty called Convention on the International Maritime Organization  Members agree to follow the Convention
