LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE HTML and CSS 8th Edition Chapter 21: Publishing Your Pages on the Web

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Objectives Publish pages on the web. Register a domain name. Find a host for site. Connect the domain and the web host. Transfer files to the server. Define a new FTP site's properties. Transfer files to the server with FileZilla.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Publishing Your Pages on the Web To publish a site on the web: –Get a domain name. –Find a web host. –Connect your domain and web host. –Transfer your files to your host’s server. Be sure to test your pages thoroughly both before and after publishing them.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Getting Your Own Domain Name A site needs a domain name and a web host. –Domain name is a name associated with site. –Web host serves the site to anyone who visits the domain in a browser. If you change web host, you can keep your domain and all URLs will stay exactly the same.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE To Get Your Own Domain Name In a browser, go to a domain registrar to see if the domain name you want is available. Register the domain. Charges vary from registrar to registrar, but about $10 a year for a.com domain is not uncommon.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Registering a Domain Name Only certain companies are accredited registrars of domain names. –Use one of their sites to see if a domain name is available, or you can check through a web host's site.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Registering a Domain Name If the name is available, you can either register it through the third-party registrar site where you checked it or register it through a web host.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Finding a Host for Your Site Web hosts provide a piece of their server for your site's files and provide other services, like allowing you to create addresses that are associated with your domain name. Most charge a monthly fee that depends on the services they offer. Some offer free web hosting in exchange for advertising from your site.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Considering a Web Host When considering a host, keep these things in mind: –Does the account allow you to host more than one domain? –How much disk space will they let you have? –How much data transfer (bandwidth) per month do their accounts allow? –How many mailboxes can you create for your domain? –Do they have plans that cater to sites with a lot of traffic? –What kind of technical support do they offer? –How often do they back up data on their servers? –What kind of server-side languages and software packages come with the account?

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Your ISP as Web Host ISPs often offer a small amount of web space for free to customers. Not enough for an entire website, but enough to get used to putting pages on the web. ISP hosting spaces typically don't allow you to put your site at a unique domain name. Instead, they are in a sub-domain or sub-directory of the ISP's domain. –You wouldn't host a professional site on free space your ISP may provide.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Web Analytics Web analytics are reports that let you know how many people have visited your site, which browsers they have used, which pages are the most (and least) popular, and other useful data. Web hosts may provide this information, but you will get richer reports by adding Google Analytics or a similar service to your site. –To implement, add a snippet of code they provide to each of your pages.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Connecting Your Domain and Your Web Host Name server (DNS) points domain to the web host. Web host provides you the DNS information to use in configuration. Actual configuration is done in one of two places: –If registered with domain registrar: Log in to your account with them and set the name server information for your domain (your domain registrar will provide instructions). –If registered domain through web host: Log in to account there to update settings.

LEARN THE QUICK AND EASY WAY! VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE Transferring Files to the Server FTP client is used to upload pages to web host's server. –Web host s FTP connection information to you after you sign up for a hosting account.
