Lesson 15 David Made King Over All Israel David’s “Army” David’s Family David’s Plans Re: The Ark 2 Samuel 5: Chronicles 11-14

 No more rivals (Ish-bosheth the last one) – Even during Saul’s reign, the people admit they knew David was the “real” leader – They also admit they knew God’s plans – The people make a covenant with David David King Over All Israel 1 Chron 11:1-9 We’ve seen how far David has come…from a “lad” to a 30 year-old king What’s never wavered? Faith (trust) in God

Sideline thought…  1 Samuel 16 intro to David  JOSEPHUS says that David was ten, while most modern commentators are of the opinion that he must have been fifteen years of age  David and Jonathan BFF  What was Jonathan doing in 1 Samuel 14?

 The capture of Jerusalem (Jebus) – This reminds us of Israel’s earlier failures to take this city Josh 15:63 Judg 1:21 – David finally captures God’s chosen city Deut 12:5, Chron 7 Ezek 10 Isa 2:2-3 Lk 24:46-47 Acts 1:4-8 (Matt 24:1-2Rev 3:7,12) – Hiram gives David materials for a palace… he’ll later help Solomon re: the temple David King Over All Israel 1 Chron 11:1-9

 Small beginning 1 Sam 22:2 – A detailed listing of heroic men of valor, strength, and great skill 11:20, :8,  Now a formidable force – Men who have proven their worth and loyalty to David through good & hard times 12:23-37 David’s “Army” 1 Chron 11:10 – 12: , :41 Uriah the Hittite

 In Bible times, the most prominent way a man felt blessed was with a large family – David increased his wives and concubines, thus having more children at Jerusalem – Sons who will have major roles later in the Bible story (Amnon, Absalom, Nathan, Solomon) David’s Family 1 Chron 14:3-7

Remember…David is in the lineage of Christ  Two important Messianic lineages – Through Joseph Matt 1:1-17 [Legal] – Through Mary Lk 3:23-38 [Real]  Another important N.T. passage…Rom 1:3-4 – The only way for this to be fulfilled was for Mary to be in this same blood line Matt 1:1-17 – Mentions Solomon – Through Joseph – The royal line Lk 3:23-38 – Mentions Nathan – Through Mary – The fleshly line

 Some historical background… – The ark captured in battle 1 Sam 4 – Remained in Philistine hands only a short while…Dagon had “trouble” 1 Sam 5 – Philistia returned the ark…it eventually settled in Kiriath-jearim (Baale-judah) 1 Sam 6 1 Chron 13:6 2 Sam 6:2 – Question…how long had it been there before David decides to retrieve it? David’s Plans for the Ark All before Israel demanded a king 1 Sam 8:5

 The ark in Kiriath-jearim – Israel lamented 20 years 1 Sam 7:2 – Saul reigned 40 years Acts 13:21 – David has already reigned 7½ years in Hebron 2 Sam 5:5 – Unknown length of time for Samuel’s judging of Israel David’s Plans for the Ark At least years

 David obviously understood the ark’s significance to the new united nation – The previous administration had not even cared to seek it 1 Chron 13:2-3  The ark represented God’s presence Ex 25:10-22  This important piece of furniture must be at the center of David’s kingdom David’s Plans for the Ark

 As good an idea as it was in rescuing the ark and bringing it home to Jerusalem, David’s logistical plan in getting it there was that bad  That is the rest of the …..  as you read look for the phrase…  “inquired of the Lord” David’s Plans for the Ark
