Design Using Sourced Parts Part 1

Your Assignment Design and build a functional coffee maker using only sourced parts.

French Press Plunger (98) is removed from carafe (10) and coffee beans are placed in mesh hopper (94). Hot water is poured into carafe (10) and plunger (98) is inserted into carafe until beans have been extracted. Remove plunger (98) and serve. Key Considerations Seal (92) between carafe and mesh hopper (94) – needed to prevent beans from entering water supply Pouring – some french press coffee makers trap the beans below the mesh. This allows the plunger to remain intact while pouring the coffee.

Stovetop Espresso Maker As bottom reservoir (1) is heated, air (14) expands and forces water (12) through lower vertical tube (18) and through coffee grinds (9). Water continues through upper vertical tube (15) and empties into upper reservoir (2) ready for serving. Key Considerations: Air tight seal (11) – allows air pressure to force water through lower vertical tube (18) Coffee filter (9) – mesh fine enough to prevent coffee grinds from flowing through

Drip Coffee Maker Water is poured into reservoir (11) and flows into hose (42) with 1-way valve. Heating element (12) causes water in tube (42) to boil and expand. 1-Way valve prevents backflow and forces water up vertical column (13) into intermediate chamber (16). Water pours through spout (34) and into filter (15) containing coffee grinds. Coffee drips into serving carafe (16) ready to serve. Good Explanation at: t50 Key Considerations 1-Way Valve – helps water push through vertical tube (13) without falling backward. Heating Element (12) – how can heat be transferred to tube efficiently? 42

Steps 1.Name your team 2.15-Minute brainstorm 3.Sketch your idea (including the parts) 4.Divide parts & source 5.Document all parts on order forms 6.Staple your sketch and order forms together – give to instructor when complete

Rules 1.$200 Budget per team 2.Only minor modifications on sourced parts are allowed (i.e. drilling holes, cutting length) 3.Parts must be shippable same day (3-day time arrival) 4.Have fun!
