DEFINITION OF SETTLEMENT. -A settlement may be defined as a Group of building with people living In them for purposes of engaging in Social, economic, political and cultural Activities. TYPES OF SETTLEMENT: There are two types of settlements: [i]Rural Settlement [ii ]Urban settlement. [a]Rural settlement: Characteristics : -It is a relatively small area with socially Homogenous people. - It could be nucleated,dispersed or linear. – It has a Population of less than 10,000 people. – People, here, engage in primary Activities e. g Agriculture,Lumbering, e. t. c -People share the same cultural background and language.. - Buildings found here are few, with Few social amenities... TYPES OF RURAL SETTLEMENT : - Home stead. –Hamlet. – villaqgs..

FUNCTIONS OF RURALSETTLEMENT: The two major criteria used in classifying Settlement into rural and urban settlement are: [i] Size [ii]Function. FACTORS AFFECTING THE GROWTH OF SETTLEMENT : - accessibility, -economic activities. administration, - provision of social amenities. – nature of soils. -absence of disaster. – relief. –climate. -

BENEFITS/INTERDEPENDENCE BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN SETTLEMENT Urban and rural settlement are interdependence i. e they depend on each Other for their continuous existence: DEPENDENCE OF URBAN SETTLEMENT ON RURAL SETTLEMENT : The rural areas perform the following functions for the urban centers: - Provision of food. - Unskilled labour supply. –Medicinal herbs. -Industrial raw materials.
