Chapter Summary At the end of this chapter, student will be able to: 1) Identify various product of operating system such as Windows, Linux, Mac 2) Identify various version of operating system product 3) Identify hardware compatibility and minimum requirement for installation of a particular operating system. 4) Identify open source and closed source operating system F2032 Fundamental of OS

Operating System Product: Microsoft Windows F2032 Fundamental of OS Microsoft Windows is a series of software operating systems and graphical user interfaces produced by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer market, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced previously. As of October 2009, Windows had approximately 91% of the market share of the client operating systems for usage on the Internet. The most recent client version of Windows is Windows 7.

(formerly Apple Computer, Inc.) for their Macintosh line of computer systems. The Macintosh user experience is credited with popularizing the graphical user interface. The original form of what Apple would later name the "Mac OS" was the integral and unnamed system software first introduced in 1984 with the original Macintosh, usually referred to simply as the System software. Mac OS X is the latest version which has superseded the "Classic" Mac OS.

Open source OS Vs Closed source OS F2032 Fundamental of OS Open Source OSClosed Source OS - True-open-source development requires that a community of software engineers band together to work on the software. -The idea is that more minds create better software. - Owned by someone (or some organization) and distributed through a variety of retail channels including the owner's website. - If the program is in the form of shareware, a fully functional version of the program can be installed and run. - There may be a limited period of time after which the software will disable itself Include source code for those interested in peering into how the program does what it does and possibly contributing to the development effort. The source code is not usually included. The buyer pays for the right to use the program but does not own it Example: ?

Activity F2032 Fundamental of OS 1) What is the latest version of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Red Hat Enterprise Linux? 2) Who is the CEO of Microsoft Windows who is also known as the richest man in the world? 3) Does Microsoft Windows XP compatible to be used in Mac PowerPC G3? 4) What is the main difference between open source OS & closed source OS?
