GENRES OF LITERATURE

GENRE, TEXT,& DISCOURSE GENRE: three classical forms of the literary tradition Text type is a broader term that is also applicable to “non-canonical” written texts, Discourse is the broadest term, referring to a variety of written and oral manifestations which share common thematic or structural features. (Klarer, 1999:4)

DEFINITION the French term for a type, species, or class of composition; types or classes of literature (Abrams, 1999: 108) a recognizable and established category of written work employing such common CONVENTIONS as will prevent readers or audiences from mistaking it for another kind (Baldic, 2001:105).

MAIN GENRE

Plato and Aristotle, Lyric (uttered throughout in the first person), Epic or narrative (in which the narrator speaks in the first-person, then lets his characters speak for themselves); Drama (in which the characters do all the talking) (Abrams, 1999: 108)

MAIN GENRE POETRY DRAMA PROSE FILM (Klarer, 1999: 9)

GENRE & LITERARY HISTORY CONFUSION OF CLASSIFICATION – EPIC VS POETRY – DRAMA VS POETRY

POETRY Poetry is one of the oldest genres limited to characteristics such as verse, rhyme, and meter the choice of words, the use of syntactic structures and rhetorical figures POETRY VS PROSE

PROSE/ FICTION Prose is an inclusive term for all discourse, spoken or written, which is not patterned into the lines either of metric verse or of free verse (Abrams, 1999: 246). Prosaic and prosy have a derogatory meaning of dullness and ordinarinesss (Baldick, 2001: 207)

DRAMA The dramatic or performing arts, combine the verbal with a number of non-verbal or optical- visual means, including stage, scenery, shifting of scenes, facial expressions, gestures, make- up, props and lighting Greek “draein” (“to do,” “to act”), thereby referring to a performance or representation by actors.

FILM film criticism is closely related to the traditional approaches of textual studies drama and film are often categorized under the heading performing arts because they use actors as their major means of expression
