In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Every believer in Jesus is called to walk as He walked, with humility. In Living Mission–Walk Humbly, you will find compelling examples of how Nazarene missionaries live out the third command in Micah 6:8—to walk humbly. In this presentation you will learn what it means to be called to missions. The goal is to gain an understanding of how missionaries are trained to help without hurting the cultures they are sent to serve. In the future you will be inspired by Nazarene missionaries as they tell of handing the work God gave them to national leaders.

What Is a Missionary? “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28: 19-20b

The Church of the Nazarene believes in and is committed to this mandate from Jesus Christ. Reaching our world is done locally, as well as globally, through His church. We also believe God selects individuals to serve specifically as missionaries. A missionary is called by God to serve cross-culturally and sent by the church to go and share the good news of Jesus Christ. The Church of the Nazarene desires to help those who experience God’s call to become missionaries.

The most important aspect of being a missionary is a consistent and constantly growing and deepening relationship with Christ. Someone with a call to be a missionary should be involved in, and a member of their local Nazarene church. The development of a call into missions can happen where you are now. In our ever growing and changing world most cities and towns have numerous opportunities for cross cultural service close to home. Ministry involvement should be coupled with the desire and initiative to gain cross cultural training, some of which can be facilitated through books, websites, seminars, and mentoring.

Missionaries are sent around the world as catalysts for evangelism and church development. A missionary candidate should have a degree in the area they are gifted and graced in and feel called to. A missionary candidate needs to have practical work experience in their desired service role. A missionary candidate also be free of major debt and be in good health. What can the candidate do?

All missionaries, by definition, are engaged in evangelism. Most missionaries are called on to preach, regardless of their training or profession. Outside of pioneering assignments, church development missionaries work alongside to mentor, guide and disciple national leaders to develop the local and district church. As such, all missionaries are called to be catalysts. They are to be models, teachers, and encouragers of preaching and evangelism. The goal is to build passion and enthusiasm for preaching and evangelism among local leaders and pastors.

When will I be ready to go? Becoming a Global Missionary The process to become a global missionary is strategically designed to help you assess and reassess your call at various points in your journey. This process is intended to help you become the best missionary possible. Our goal is to guide you as you prepare for a lifetime of missionary service, placed where God can best utilize your gifts. Whether one is interested in serving cross-culturally for two weeks, two months, two years, or a lifetime, training is a crucial part of preparing to go. The Church of the Nazarene recognizes the importance of training for cross-cultural ministry and provides a Cross-Cultural Orientation (CCO) weekend event several times throughout the year. We know we cannot cover all the topics regarding cross-cultural service in a weekend. Mission Call Coordinator Resources Jubilee Village The Jubilee Village simulation will be a tangible way to learn what it means to "love your neighbor as yourself" and to recognize those of all nationalities as those neighbors.

Dr. Stephanie Doenges, a former member at Westridge CN while doing her internship, went through this process and is presently serving in Papua-New Guinea as a medical doctor.

Dr. Stephanie Doenges grew up in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. As a teenager, she sensed God's call to medical missions. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and received her M.D. from the Ohio State University. Stephanie completed a residency in family medicine at JPS hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas and then completed her training with a one year fellowship in obstetrics. She returned to JPS to serve on the residency faculty until she was appointed as an intern missionary by the Church of the Nazarene in In January 2009, Stephanie moved to Papua New Guinea where she joined a team of missionary doctors and national support staff who provide medical and spiritual care to the patients of Kudjip Nazarene Hospital. Stephanie enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, eating ethnic food, hiking, playing the piano, and watching Ohio State football! Her heart's desire is to live each day for the glory of God. Soli Deo Gloria.

For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the L ORD Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
