Chapter 1: Matter and Change Dr. C’s Pre-AP Chemistry Lake Dallas High School Fall 2014
Definition: Chemistry is the study of matter and its processes.
What is chemistry?
Branches of Chemistry Organic – The study of most carbon- containing compounds Inorganic – The study of non-carbon compounds (usually) Physical – The study of properties and changes of matter and their relation to energy Analytical – Identification of the components and composition of materials
Branches of Chemistry (Continued) Biochemistry – study of substances and processes in living things. Theoretical chemistry- the use of math and computers to understand chemical behavior and to design and predict the properties of new compounds
Branches are not absolute! Branches intermix quite a bit. What kind of chemist was Dr. C? – Biophysical inorganic surface chemistry! (Which is a branch of nano-technology)
Analytical Chemistry
Biochemistry
Theoretical Chemistry
