An Author’s Clues Authors usually give clues called CONTEXT CLUES. Context clues are hints that help readers discover the meaning of unfamiliar words.

I. Context Clues A. Context of a word is the surrounding text—the words and phrases around the word that give clues to its meaning. B. Use context clues when you come across an unfamiliar word to help unlock the meaning of the word.

Example The puppy stopped in the road, wagging its tail timidly. It approached Karen shyly, as if it were afraid. Karen picked up the puppy hastily and decided to take it home. Unfamiliar word: timidly Clue (example in text): shyly Probable meaning: Timidly probably means showing shyness.
