REPUBLIC OF HONDURAS

FACTS  Known for its production of minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, sugar cane, beans, corn and bananas, as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market.  Located at Central America.  Bordered to the west: Guatemala; southwest: El Salvador; southeast: Nicaragua; south: Pacific Ocean; north: Caribbean Sea.  Area of about 112,492 km².

FACTS  Population of more than 8 millions people.  Multiethnic, 4 major ethnic families: majority white or mestizos, indigenous peoples (Lenca, Miskito, Tolupanes, Chortis, Pech, Tawahkas), Garifuna and Creole English speakers.  Rugged territory, with rows of high mountains, high plateaus, deep valleys with extensive and fertile plains crossed by rivers (99.8% land, 0.2% water).

STATISTICS  Life expectancy at birth: 73.4 years  Children average schooling: 11.4 years  GDP per capita: USD$3,426  9.5% of the population is elderly, of which less tan 1.6% receives a pension.  Birth rate: 26.14%  Fertility Rate: 3.05 children per woman  More tan 50% lives under the poverty line.

ECONOMY  Grows on agriculture and remittances.  Less than 40% of Hondurans are economically active.  40% agriculture sector  30% in services  16% in industry  Many work at the informal economy, which makes difficult to identify (selling fruits, vegetables, clothes, and various other items in the streets).

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE Source: Central Bank of Honduras  The new government launched the program “Better Life”, that pretends to create 25,000 jobs per year during the next 4 years.  In the first 3 months, more tan 8,400 people were inserted to the labor force.
