Energy Source Geothermal energy is created by the heat of the earth, it makes reliable energy and produces almost no greenhouse gases.

History Human beings have used geothermal energy in North America for 10,000 years, the Paleo Indians got it from hot springs and used it to cook. The first industrial use of geothermal energy was near Pisa, Italy in the late 1800’s. The first large Geothermal Energy plant was in San Francisco in the 1960’s.

Where do we get it? We get geothermal energy from deep in the earth and it comes up from hot springs, geysers and volcanoes. Geothermal energy is found mostly in the western part of the United States

How is it stored and released? It is stored as stored as thermal energy under the earth. Then it is released as mechanical when it powers the generator that creates electricity.

How is it used today Geothermal technology is the most advanced, most cost-efficient ventilating and air conditioning systems (HVAC). It is powered by the earths renewable energy. In hot weather, heat is taken from the home and transferred into the ground, and when winter comes around they extract the heat from the ground and put it into the house.

Advantages Does not produce pollution No fuel needed Other than cost of building the facility obtaining the energy is virtually free. Geothermal is a renewable energy source, so we will never run out of it.

Disadvantages Geothermal energy needs a very specific place to drill (Ex: it needs a certain type of rocks, right depth, the right place to drill etc.) Sometimes a geothermal site may run out of steam Hazardous gases may come up from underground while drilling. Sometimes they can trigger earthquakes.

Future? Geothermal energy will most likely be part of our future. This is because its renewable and will never run out. However some geothermal plants have created earthquakes. For this reason they may be seen as a safety hazard and production of geothermal energy could be shut down. If it is not shut down in thirty years, geothermal energy will most likely be the same as the technology to obtain it is the newest and most efficient of its time.
