Introduction Christopher was born in the year of 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Christopher started learning sailing at a young age. This was started by going on short fishing trips, then escalating into longer and more extensive trips with merchants. He made a total of four trips to the Caribbean and South America during the years Caribbean Studies3
First Voyage His intention was to travel westward across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a shorter route to Asia. He had a theory that the world was 25% smaller and round, and it composes of mostly land. Caribbean Studies4

Second Voyage The second voyage took place on September 24, 1493 and was more extensive. His aim was to find gold and to conquer the Taíno tribe and colonise the region. Columbus established a base in Hispaniola and sailed around Hispaniola and along the length of southern Cuba. He spotted and named the island of Dominica on November 3, Caribbean Studies6
Third Voyage On a third expedition May 30,1498 Columbus sailed farther south, to Trinidad and Venezuela. Columbus was the first European since the Viking Leif Ericsson to set foot on the mainland of America.Leif Ericsson Caribbean Studies7
Fourth Voyage On May 11, 1502, Christopher Columbus set out on his fourth and final voyage to the New World. his mission was to explore uncharted areas to the west of the Caribbean, hopefully finding a passage west to the Orient. Caribbean Studies8
