Introduction Japanese people have sparsely furnished homes. They have tatami floors (mats made of rushes). Sliding doors made of wood or paper enclose the rooms. Some Japanese homes are 3d printed!!!!!!!!!!!!! Traditional houses are small and made of wood with a tiled roof They have a special place in the house (tokonoma) where a scroll and flowers sit However, in the cities most people now live in apartments Few homes have central heating, even in the cities

Shoes are taken off when entering the house……why? This is because the Japanese have developed the custom of eating meals sitting on tatami carpets or zabutons (cushions). Therefore they take off their shoes to avoid the house getting dirty. Japanese people sleep on futons (mattresses on the ground with a blanket on top). These are put away in closets during the day.

Most Japanese gardens are surrounded by bamboo fences or bushes. Because Japan is such a densely populated country and space is limited, gardens are small. They usually contain some shrubbery and perhaps a group of carefully arranged rocks, all designed to give a feeling of peace and quiet.
