Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion S haking in the Wind: I was a breezy Spring day in I was walking on to the campus from the south end of the campus. And my Nikon Coolpix 5400 was still relatively new and waiting to be tested. I noticed some yellow flowers shaking in the wind. The direct sunlight, the dark ivy background, and the shaking made them stand out.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion T aking the Challenge: I liked what I saw and my new camera needed testing. I usually avoid shooting in direct sunlight and I don’t shoot object that are doing the jitterbug. Actually the direct sunlight was going to work in my favor because I needed super fast shutter speed to freeze the windy gyrations. So… … …

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion M y Priorities: 1 of 2 1.High image quality for enlarging up to 11x14. And to get that, I set the ISO at 50 which counters the idea of needing a super fast shutter speed. 2.I set the camera to shutter priority to force the shutter speed to 1/2000 second. 3.My very slow ISO choice and the exceedingly fast shutter speed resulted in f/2.8 as my aperture.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion M y Priorities: 2 of 2 4.The 1/2000 sec speed had a good change of stopping the movement But f/2.8 wide-open is in the emergency use only category. 5.F/2.8 is also used when shallow DOF is desired. To counter act this reality, I chose to use the 28mm (equiv.) super wide angle focal length. 6.I was ready to shoot knowing that I was going against a few of my own ‘don’t do’s”.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion T he Shot that Caught my Eye This image has been basic lab worked but not cropped. And the lab work goal was to show you what I saw… without the wind moving the flowers and leaves.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion G ot It: My educated guesswork got the sharp result that I was looking for.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion H idden Point: About exposure technique. This image was shot with an EC Bias of ‘-1’. Solo or team study this image and come with the right explanation about the correct EC adjustment.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Windy Day: Stopping subject motion S ummary: Build good habits Besides the drawing with light thing, photography is a combination of science, art, and geometry. It will take a lot of practice to get all of it right and to work together in Making your final image a success.
