Belbin’s Team Roles Plant Resource Investigator Coordinator Shaper Monitor Evaluator Team worker Implementer Completer Specialist

Team Roles Each team role has: Strengths Allowable weaknesses Non-allowable weaknesses

Plant Creative, imaginative, unorthodox. Solves difficult problems. Ignores incidentals. Too preoccupied to communicate effectively. Strong ownership of idea when co-operation with others would yield better results.

Resource Investigator Extrovert, enthusiastic, communicative. Explores opportunities. Develops contacts. Overly optimistic. Loses interest once initial enthusiasm has passed. Letting people down by neglecting to make follow-up arrangements.

Coordinator Mature, confident, a good chairperson. Clarifies goals, promotes decision-making, delegates well. Can be seen as manipulative. Offloads personal work. Takes credit for the effort of the team.

Shaper Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. Has the drive and courage to overcome obstacles. Prone to provocation. Offends the feelings of others. Inability to recover situation with good humour or apology.

Monitor Evaluator Sober, strategic and discerning. Sees all options. Judges accurately. Lacks drive and ability to inspire others. Cynicism without logic.

Team worker Co-operative, mild, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens, builds,averts friction. Indecisive in crunch situations. Avoids situations which may entail pressure.

Implementer Disciplined, reliable, conservative and efficient. Somewhat inflexible. Slow to respond to new possibilities. Obstructing change.

Completer Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors and omissions. Delivers on time. Inclined to worry unduly. Reluctant to delegate. Obsessive behaviour.

Specialist Single-minded, self-starting and dedicated. Provides knowledge and skills in rare supply. Contributes on only a narrow front. Dwells on technicalities. Ignores factors outside own area of competence.
