SHE Code 36: ‘Management and Provision of First Aid’ Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group

This code should be read by: First Aiders Members of HR and Occupational Health teams involved with First Aid management and Managers of staff and Contractor Contract Supervising Officers

Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group SHE Code 36: ‘Management and Provision of First Aid’

Why a First Aid code? The STFC has a duty to ensure staff receive immediate First Aid if they are injured or taken ill at work irrespective of cause. First Aid can save lives, for example in the event of heart attack, and can prevent minor injuries becoming more serious. This code addresses the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

Establishes requirement for First Aid cover at all STFC sites and where STFC staff work non STFC sites; Encompasses the provision of First Aid by contractors working at, and tenants on, STFC sites; Ensures provision of sufficient numbers of qualified First Aiders across sites to provide first aid cover; Outlines the provision of HSE Approved ‘First Aid at Work’ training, and Defibrillator and oxygen training for First Aiders; Guidance provided on first aid hardware needs for: first aid bags/boxes and treatment rooms; and the transport of injured parties to hospital’; and Addresses the recording and reporting First Aid treatment provided. Key features

Interested in First Aid? Contact local Occupational Health or HR teams - RAL 6666; DL 3234; SO 2061; ATC who can advise of places and if successful training. Further questions should be directed to SHE Group - Graeme Finlan, DL, 3147, RAL, Mark Roberts, DL, Matt Dickson, RAL, Rose Russell, SO, Linda Fisher, ATC, 413 Or your Departmental Safety Contact

First Aid – a reminder Minor injuries: Contact your local First Aider(s) – if you don’t who your local First Aider is - find out - try using the STFC ‘SHE Directory’ (Occupational Health teams, where they exist, should be a last resort) More serious injuries or incapacitation: a) At RAL and SO call 2222, DL call 3333 and UKATC call 222 from the nearest telephone and ask for First Aid Assistance; b) Give exact location (building & room); c) Cope with the immediate emergency making the casualty safe; and d) If an ambulance is called from the incident scene inform Site Security.

See “What’s new” at Are you a First Aider? (or interested in becoming one?) Do you know who your local First Aider is and/or how to contact them? See ‘Management and Provision of First Aid’ STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Issued Sept 2009
