SMRBC SAFE KIDS SAFETY & SECURITY POLICIES FOR VOLUNTEERS WORKING WITH MINORS

DOCUMENTS TO HAVE… TRAINING BROCHURE SCREENING APPLICATION

WHAT IS SAFE KIDS?

SMRBC has a collection of policies and practices that it has put into place to help keep the children we minister to safe and secure at all times. These policies have been designed to protect:  children from harm,  volunteers from false accusation, and  the name of Christ from being disgraced. In following these simple guidelines, workers will be able to serve with confidence, knowing that their actions will be above reproach. Parents, likewise, will know that their children are safe when in our care. These policies are to be followed in any instance where volunteers are ministering to children as part of a SMRBC-sponsored ministry or trip.

GOALS  Establish continuous accountability for interactions between volunteers and children  Eliminate commonly suspicious, damaging, or potentially dangerous situations  Provide a consistent and transparent process for handling suspicions, incidents, or child reports  Educate and train all volunteers on appropriate policies and procedures  Screen Volunteers for risk

11 NEED-TO-KNOW VOLUNTEER POLICIES

UNIVERSAL VOLUNTEER POLICIES 1. Never be alone in an isolated place with a child or student 2. At least two workers should be present with a preschool group. 3. When only one volunteer is ministering with a group of students, leave the classroom door open 4. When a volunteer is assisting children with bathroom needs, prop the bathroom door open

UNIVERSAL VOLUNTEER POLICIES 5. Keep careful track of each child in your care until they are given back to their parents by following all hand-off policies between parents and volunteers and by keeping and checking head counts of children 6. Only female volunteers change diapers or assist in bathrooms 7. While you can show appropriate affection, avoid touching a child anywhere on their body that could be misunderstood by the child or another person.

UNIVERSAL VOLUNTEER POLICIES 8. Older minors working in ministry with younger children are always under direct adult supervision [ minors over 15 years old are required to comply with Safe Kids training requirements] 9. Never spank, pinch, hit, or be rough with a child [no corporal punishment] 10. Instead of harsh words or physical punishment, seek to use redemptive discipline through positive reinforcement, corrective Biblical teaching opportunities, active lesson movement, warnings, time outs, and parent involvement

UNIVERSAL VOLUNTEER POLICIES 11. Take all volunteer, parent, or child suspicions or incident reports seriously, reporting them to a Pastor immediately and refraining from discussing with others.

SAFE KIDS VOLUNTEER ROLES REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITS FOR VOLUNTEERS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF MINISTRY INVOLVEMENT SMRBC has three levels of SAFE KIDS volunteer service. These levels allow volunteers to serve in a variety of low-risk roles from early in their involvement in our church. As they have a chance to connect more in the church and grow in ministry, they can take on roles of greater responsibility.

SAFE KIDS LEVEL ONE THE “NEW TO SMRBC, NEW TO OUR MINISTRY” VOLUNTEER

SAFE KIDS LEVEL ONE REQUIREMENTS 1. Must receive training and agree to abide by Safe Kids policies & procedures. 2. Must fill out a Background Check form. Background checks are performed on all volunteers as budget allows, and on random or high-risk volunteers if resources are limited. 3. Must have 3 months of regular church attendance at SMRBC or be an immediate family member or caregiver of a ministry participant or ministry leader 4. Must be personally screened and approved by the ministry leader or Pastoral Staff

SAFE KIDS LEVEL ONE LIMITS 1. Cannot take a teaching role 2. Cannot be the only ministry volunteer with a group in a room 3. Cannot help with bathroom needs or diaper changing 4. Cannot chaperone overnight ministry activities such as lock- ins or camp

SAFE KIDS LEVEL TWO THE WELL-KNOWN VOLUNTEER

SAFE KIDS LEVEL TWO REQUIREMENTS 1. Must receive training and agree to abide by Safe Kids policies & procedures. 2. Must fill out a Background Check form. Background checks are performed on all volunteers as budget allows, and on random or high-risk volunteers if resources are limited. 3. Must have 6 months of regular church attendance at SMRBC 4. Must be personally interviewed and approved by a member of the Pastoral Staff

SAFE KIDS LEVEL TWO LIMITS 1. Cannot chaperone overnight ministry activities such as lock-ins or camp

SAFE KIDS LEVEL THREE THE MINISTRY VETERAN

SAFE KIDS LEVEL THREE REQUIREMENTS 1. Must receive training and agree to abide by Safe Kids policies & procedures. 2. Must fill out a Background Check form. Background checks are performed on all volunteers as budget allows, and on random or high-risk volunteers if resources are limited. 3. Must have 1 year of regular church attendance at SMRBC 4. Must be personally interviewed and approved by a member of the Pastoral Staff 5. Must be regularly involved in a SMRBC Life Group, or be similarly spiritually invested in a church fellowship if a Life Group is not available (such as out-of-area College students)

SAFE KIDS LEVEL THREE LIMITS 1. None except as set by Pastoral Staff or Ministry Team leader

SOME CONCLUDING NOTES

NOTES While it is vital to our ministry that our children are protected and safe and that our parents are able to trust in our ministry and volunteers, our focus should always remain on leading children into a growing relationship with Christ. Always strive for more than just babysitting, continually pointing children to Christ through your words, teaching, and example.

NOTES Just as it is vital to keep our ministry focused on Christ, it is also vital that our volunteers remain spiritually healthy and vibrant. All ministry volunteers should strive to participate in the 4 E’s of the church, encountering God in worship, encouraging one another in Life Groups, equipping for ministry through discipleship, and engaging in ministry and evangelism inside and outside of the church.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU  Fill out the information requested in the right-hand portion of the Brochure – front and back  For references, please provide one from within SMRBC, one from outside, your Life Group leader, and your previous church.  Sign where appropriate  For our Youth Workers, a parent must also sign  Turn in your completed information to the facilitator of this session.

HOW CAN WE HELP?  Let us know if you need to talk with someone.  Know that we care about you.  Do you have any questions? Thank you so much for your desire to serve and point these kids to Christ! Our ministry depends on your involvement!
