Mosaic Art Teaching Math through the Arts Amanda Escudero

What is Mosaic Art? art of creating pictures and patterns on a surface using a combination of small materials of varying sizes to create a final work of art. Different materials – glass, stones, tile Dates back many many years. Used as decorations.

Organic vs. Geometric Irregular shapes, often found in nature. Rectangles, triangles, octagons, squares. Complex and stable. Not often found in nature. OrganicGeometric

Examples of Mosaic Art What do you see? What kinds of shapes are used? What kinds of colors are used?

Examples of Mosaic Art What do you see? What kinds of shapes are used? What kinds of colors are used?

Have you seen mosaics around you? Hilton Hawaiian VillageSanrio Ala Moana

Have you seen mosaics around you? Halekulani Hotel Pool

Create your own mosaic! Using different colored paper, create an image of your own that expresses yourself and tells us about who you are!

TWIST Let’s use MATH too! If = 9 then = 4 ½ and = 2 ¼ Add up the total amount for each shape and create a multiplication sentence for each different shape. Example: 16 squares  16 x 9 = half trianges  10 x 4 ½ = 45 3 fourth trianges  3 x 2 ¼ = 6 ¾
