Characteristics Make Eye Contact Don’t Interrupt Be Attentive Face the Speaker Keep an Open Mind Picture what the speaker is saying

Characteristics… Don’t impose your thoughts on the speaker Wait for the speaker to finish what they are saying before asking questions Watch for Facial Expressions and Gestures Demonstrate that you are paying attention Ask clarifying questions

Face the Speaker Looking at the speaker is important to see how they are feeling and to read their social cues. It also shows respect to the speaker. Facing the speaker demonstrates that you are paying attention.

Don’t Interrupt Saying Uh-huh or yes in between what the person is saying to show that you are listening.

Paying Attention Demonstration Don’t look in other directions. Don’t fidget.

Clarifying Questions Clarifying Questions help to fully understand what the person is saying. Asking these questions will help you to understand how they feel about what they are talking about.

Examples of Clarifying Questions What do you really mean? Can you clarify that for me? What does that mean? Can you be more specific? Why do you think that? Are you saying that…. Are you claiming…. Do you mean… So you are saying…
