vocabulary word (put this word on the back of the card.) THIS WILL BE THE DEFINITION – FILL IN THE BLANKS ON THE VOCABULARY CARDS PROVIDED.

set A COLLECTION OF ITEMS.

element AN ITEM IN A SET.

subset A SET THAT IS CONTAINED ENTIRELY WITHIN ANOTHER SET.

empty set A SET WITH NO ELEMENTS.

finite set A SET WITH A DEFINITE, OR FINITE, NUMBER OF ELEMENTS.

infinite set A SET WITH AN UNLIMITED, OR INFINITE, NUMBER OF ELEMENTS.

natural numbers THE SET OF COUNTING NUMBERS. {1, 2, 3, 4,....}

whole numbers THE SET OF NATURAL NUMBERS AND ZERO. {0, 1, 2, 3, 4,... }

integer A MEMBER OF THE SET OF WHOLE NUMBERS AND THEIR OPPOSITES. { , -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,.....}

rational number

irrational number A REAL NUMBER THAT CANNOT BE EXPRESSED AS THE RATIO OF TWO INTEGERS. EXAMPLE: 

real number A RATIONAL OR IRRATIONAL NUMBER.

function notation IF x IS THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE, AND y IS THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE, THE FUNCTIONS NOTATION FOR Y IS f(x), READ f of x WHERE f NAMES THE FUNCTION.
