Do now: Take out the homework that you were assigned over the weekend to keep track of all the meals and snacks that you ate.

Question: Do you know why you had to keep track of the food that you ate over the weekend?

Answer: The reason that you all kept track of the food that you all ate was because we are going to look at your eating habits and compare it to the food pyramid.

Nutritional Facts: As you get older eating healthy is going to be something you think about a great deal. There are hundreds of good tasting foods out there though many of them are bad for you. Unfortunately, depending on the foods you eat and how much of them you eat in a sitting you can end up becoming overweight and having considerable health problems. If you have started looking at food and wondering if it is good for you and what it will do to your body then you are heading in the right direction. The key to healthy eating begins with moderation. As much as French Fries and pizza taste good they can also be hazardous to your health if you eat them everyday.

Food Pyramid:

Food Pyramid Teaching: Proteins help keep muscles strong. Dairy products provide calcium to keep bones strong. Carbohydrates are used to provide energy for the body. Fruits and vegetables provide many needed vitamins and nutrients. Fats are also used in helping provide energy.

Song: Song : Alive with Five Lyrics: (Talking about the five food groups, what they are and what they help do) Banana is a fruit, broccoli is a veggie Rice is a grain, chicken is a protein food Milk is dairy, and now we’ve got five We’re going to feel our best (uh huh), we’re going to feel alive! Chorus: Alive, with five, both you and I Alive with five, let’s give them a try Fruits and vegetables, dairy and grains Add to that a protein food and you’ll be on your way! So many fruits and vegetables are good for me Some help me heal my wounds, or give me more energy Sometimes I like to eat them with some meat, bread, and cheese These five food groups give me what I need, wouldn’t you agree? Chorus I’ve got a red apple (a fruit, a fruit) And green spinach leaves (a vegetable, a vegetable) I toasted up some bread (a grain, a grain) With some low-fat cheddar cheese (that’s dairy, that’s dairy) A few slices of turkey (a protein food, a protein food) That’s a fine-looking plate (my plate, my plate) If you want to be healthy, if you want to feel your best These five food groups are the key to your success! Chorus <

Water Intake

Importance Of Drinking Water Water makes up more than half of your body weight. A steady supply is necessary to keep his body working properly. Approximately 6-8 glasses of water is recommended daily. Try to bring water daily with you to school.

Reading Food Labels

In order to plan a healthy diet, we must know how to read a food label. Food labels show us if a food has a little or a lot of certain nutrients. Look on the side of a product to find the Nutrition Facts title. You will find the serving size of the food below the nutrition facts title. Similar food products have similar serving sizes. The servings per container are also included to let you compare what you actually eat with the serving size on that product. So remember, if the serving size is 1 cup and you eat 2 cups, then you will need to double the numbers on the label. % Daily values are listed to give you an idea of how one serving of a product contributes nutritionally to a 2000 calorie diet. Use the % daily values to see if a food has a little or a lot of a nutrient. The amount of calories in one serving of the product is listed. Only a few nutrients are listed on the Nutrition Facts label-those that relate to today's most important health issues. The label lists total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium because people eat too much of these.
