FIRE SAFETY

FIRES & FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

FIRE TRIANGLE CLASS OF FIRE TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FIRE EXTINGUISHER MARKING FIRE SAFETY

The Fire Triangle

TO PUT OUT A FIRE YOU HAVE TO TAKE AWAY ONE OF THE ELEMENTS OXYGEN FUEL IF WE HAVE ALL THE OXYGEN IN THE WORLD WITH ALL THE EXPLOSIVE FUEL, IT STILL WON’T BURN WITHOUT ENOUGH HEAT. SO ONE WAY TO PUT OUT A FIRE IS TO REMOVE THE HEAT (QUENCH)

TO PUT OUT A FIRE OR REMOVE THE OXYGEN OXYGEN FUEL HEAT (SUFFOCATE)

TO PUT OUT A FIRE OR REMOVE THE FUEL ALTHOUGH WE USUALLY DON’T FIGHT FIRE THAT WAY. OXYGEN FUEL HEAT

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION A FIRE THAT STARTS WITHOUT ANY SPARK OR FLAME –WHEN ALL THREE ELEMENTS ARE PRESENT IN PROPER AMOUNTS

SAFETY TEST QUESTION WHEN OILY OR GREASY RAGS ARE PILED TOGETHER THEY CREATE HEAT WITH ENOUGH HEAT, WE HAVE SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION –ALL GREASY/OILY RAGS ARE STORED IN RAG SAFETY CAN ON SOUTH END OF SHOP BY TOOL ROOM

ABC DRY POWDER FIRE EXTINGUISHER

TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS MULTI-PURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL WATER FOR “A” ONLY ORDINARY DRY CHEMICAL FOR “B C” ONLY FOAM FOR “A B” ONLY CARBON DIOXIDE FOR “B C” ONLY

CO2 EXTINGUISHER

FIRE CLASSIFICATIONS

EXTINGUISHER OPERATION

PASS

GET THE NEAREST EXTINGUSHER AND SECURE THE HOSE

PULL THE PIN DON’T SQUEEZE HANDLE UNTIL READY TO DISCHARGE AGENT!

AIM AT BASE OF FIRE NEAREST TO YOU

SQUEEZE THE HANDLE USE A SIDE TO SIDE SWEEPING MOTION WORKING AWAY FROM YOU ACROSS THE FIRE

AFTER FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED WAIT FOR FLASHBACK

EXTINGUISHER MAINTENANCE Must Be Inspected Once A Year When In Public Buildings Should be checked monthly by employees –HOSE IS CHECKED FOR RESTRICTIONS –PRESSURE IS CHECKED –MADE SURE THAT DRY CHEMICAL ISN’T HARDENED IN BOTTOM How many extinguishers in the shop and Where are they???

MAINTENANCE YOU CAN’T “TEST” A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO SEE IF IT WORKS –WHEN THE EXTINGUISHER IS USED, IT MUST BE REFILLED –THE VALVE CAN LEAK AFTER USE

WHEN A FIRE STARTS YELL FIRE!! INSTRUCTOR NEEDS TO KNOW EXTINGUISH IF POSSIBLE –Have a BACKUP With a EXTINGUISHER PULL FIRE ALARM EXIT THE BUILDING “TO CALL (DIAL )”

FIRE ALARMS 2 Fire Alarms in the shop –DO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE?? IF FIRE IS IN SHOP, GO TO NEAREST EXIT

FIRE EXIT PROCEDURE If fire is not in shop walk out EXIT by shop door (Large door) TAKE ALL PERSONAL ITEMS –BACK PACKS, PURSES ETC. Meet By Tennis Court, Behind Auto Shop, STAY IN A GROUP FOR ROLL Stay off the road

ELECTRICAL BURNS

BURN FROM WEARING METAL WATCHBAND
