Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Our Mission EHS Safety Awareness Training  To promote healthy and safe operations on campus  To protect staff, faculty and students  To ensure protection of the environment

Incident at UCLA  22 years old working with pyrophoric chemical not wearing lab coat  Chemical splashed on sweater and caught fire  Died from 3 rd degree burns  Failure to properly train  Both the researcher and UC system sued  Settled for community service, scholarship and comprehensive safety measures system wide Sheri Sangji

Promoting Best Practices and a Positive Safety Culture

A Strong Safety Cultures Leadership and management—Responsibilities and accountability at the highest levels of the administration, down through schools and departments, to individual faculty and staff. Safety Attitude & Accident Prevention Safety is a key job responsibility Keep work areas neat, organized, and safe Take responsibility for identifying and eliminating hazards Do not take “short cuts” and risk becoming injured EHS Safety Awareness Training

Reporting Potentially Unsafe Conditions  If you observe a situations that could be unsafe:  Stop what you are doing  Isolate the hazard if possible  Let your supervisor or EHS know immediately EHS Safety Awareness Training

 Weekly building fire inspections  New fire extinguisher training (170 trained since Oct)  Building Evacuation Plans, plaza evacuation maps  Over 100 Fire Safety Volunteers on campus  Fire drills each semester Fire Safety

2014 – 14 incidents lab floods, incidental fires, slip in substructure, sewer backup, chemical splash to eye, lab rat bite, pool accident 2015 (to date) – 4 incidents lab flood, oil spill, cut finger Report on investigation, root cause, corrective actions and preventive measures Incident Investigation and Tracking

 Responded to 71 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) complaints (CY 2014)  18 IAQ Investigations  4 asbestos abatement projects  85 Hot Works Permits Issued  Safety training for 65 Facilities staff and 25 DPS staff  Briefing for all new employees Worker and Campus Safety
