Favorite Innovation: Logbook Assessment Form Steve Beyerlein Mechanical Engineering

What is it? Time efficient/user-friendly tool for self-assessment, peer assessment, or instructor assessment of personal documentation that is maintained on a design project.

What are the benefits? * Self reporting/rating of six best entries * Global rating of logbooks in four dimensions * Identification of best practices to sustain * Creation of action plans for improvement * Activity completion within 20 minutes by students and within 10 minutes by faculty

Why I got started? I’ve always enjoyed reading and discussing meaning that students are able to construct during project learning as well as affect towards peers/customers/project challenges. Unfortunately, I found that writing out individualized logbook messages to my capstone design students was very time- consuming and frequently repetitive.

How do you implement it? Students complete the form and paste it in their personal logbook every month. I collect logbooks on different days for different teams, turning these around overnight. My ratings and my own 1-2 sentence SII on the logbook appear right next to the student’s own assessments. Return of the logbook often leads to just-in-time mentoring moments.

What resources are on display? * Handout on logbook best practices * Examples of student logbooks as well as related final project reports * Several cycles of logbook assessment forms completed by students * Several cycles of faculty responses to logbooks and assessment forms
