The Origin of Sierra Leone Sierra Leone, a small country on the west coast of Africa, was visited by a Portuguese explorer in 1462 who gave the country its portuguese name, “Sierra Leoa” which means “Lion Mountains”. Later on, the British came to the country and officially adopted the name as Sierra Leone in Different tribes started to settle down here, such as Sherbro, Limba, Kono, and Mende. All these different backgrounds coming together resulted to more than 16 different types of ethnic groups: Yalunka. Soso, Fula, Vai, Kissi, Bullom, Krim, Koranko, Madingo, Loko etc. The largest populated ethnic group are the Mende and Temne.

Welcome to Nigeria Victoria Island, Nigeria

The Origin of Nigeria A British colonial adventurer and empire builder, Lord Fredrick Lugard, was on the search for markets, raw materials and wanted to spread political influence overseas. So he, along with his British soldiers journeyed to distant places and came across Nigeria on October 1st, The name Nigeria was derived from the country geographically above it, Niger - the name of the river that constitutes the most remarkable geographical feature in Africa. Different tribes, such as the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, and Benin, began to settle and populate the country until over 300 different languages became the foundation of the 36 states of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Culture Clothes: From the women’s headgear (gele) to the beads (ileke), any major event must include the traditional attire. Food: The orange rice (jollof rice), fried plaintain (dodo), pounded yam (iyan) and fried buns (puff-puff) are only a selection of Nigerian cuisine. Dance&Music: Dance is the on e true way Africans are known. It could be religious based, for a wedding, a performance or just for the fun of it.

Nigeria Today President Goodluck Jonathan May Present Nigerian Currency (Naira) A scene in the capital of Nigeria: Abuja Music: Nigerian Artists, such as, Flavour(left) and Tiwa Savage (right), make music very danceable and enjoyable by mixing English and another language.
