Science 2012

 Calcium: an element; a nutrient that most living things need. The human body needs calcium to build strong bones and teeth.  Digestion: the process by which the body breaks down food so that it can be used for energy  Fruit: a plant structure that contains seeds and grows from a flowering plant  Nutrients: a substance such as a fat, a protein, or a carbohydrate that a living thing needs to survive  Minerals: natural, nonliving solid crystal that makes up rocks

 To eat in a healthy way, you need food from the different food groups. The food pyramid is a chart that shows how many servings are healthy to eat each day from the following groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, meats or proteins, dairy, and oils.

 The food pyramid divides foods into five main groups: dairy (milk, yogurt, and cheese), protein (meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts), vegetables, fruits, and grains (bread, cereal, rice and pasta). The pyramid shows the amounts of each type of food that a person should eat in order to have a healthy diet. The pyramid is larger at its base and smaller at its top because a balanced diet includes more items from the bottom.

 When you practice healthy eating habits, you are eating foods with the vitamins and other nutrients your body needs to be healthy and grow strong. You are also avoiding foods that contain too much fat, sugar, or other things your body needs only a little bit of.
