Say again?  Why does the Lord repeat Ch1 in Ch 2?  Poetry (Chapter 1) vs. Narrative (Chapter 2)  Chapter 2 has more detail for the narrative Subject ComparisonChapter 1 Poetry (Factual) Chapter 2 Narrative (Descriptive) Creates Land Creates Man Garden of Eden Creates Woman

The Big Picture. The Point – Gen 1:26 3 Questions 1.Where’d I come from? 2.Why am I here? 3.Where am I going? Creatio n This is where I come from! EXALTED RELATIONSHIP

Adam, Type of Jesus  The Second Adam – 1 Cor 15:45  Miraculous Beginning  Perfect, Innocent, Holy  Adam made in image of God (Jesus).  Givers of Life  Deep sleep/Death & Wounded side produces bride  Both tempted by Satan  Failure to Victory  Adam failed the test, Jesus passed the test  Enslaved us with sin, Liberated us from sin  Expelled from paradise, Restores us to paradise

Noah  Sin spread like a virus  Gen 5 – Seth to Noah, the “righteous line”  Gen 6 – the spiral  His life shall be120 years  Sons of God (good) & Daughters of Men (evil)  Every thought of mankind was on evil  Save yourself from the perverse! Build an ark, Noah!

Really, It was Huge!

Ark Life – Gen 6  Animals came to Noah and entered the ark  Noah entered Ark on the day it began to rain  40 days & nights of solid rain – Water covered highest moutains  Global vapor canopy collapses  Fountains of the deep burst upward  5 th Month - Water peaked 150 days and began to subside  7 th month and 17 th day (2 months later) - ark rested on mountains of Ararat  10 th month – Water continues to drop. Began to see mountains tops.  11 th month – Noah opens a portal and sends forth birds  13 th month (2 months later) – Waters had dried up. God tells Noah to leave the ark

Ararat Nations – Genesis 10

Tower of Babel  Gen 9:1 – fill the earth…  Gen 11  Man organized and rebelled  Make a name  Resist dispersion  Languages  God’s will was done. They were dispersed anyway! Tower of Babel Lucas van Valckenborch, (1594)

Macro to Micro  Shift from nations to single man (Abram)  Nations not lost but blessed via him  Covenant  Based on God, not Abram’s faithfulness  God’s plan to use Abram’s faith and him  Big picture theme: All nations will be blessed through Abram by the blessing of the messiah.

Reflection & Discussion  15:7-21 – Weird Sacrificial Scene  Abram wanted assurances  Split sacrifices was a covenant  Both parties passed between them  Smoking Fire Pot represents God  Did Abram pass through? Why/Why not?  What is the implication?

“Wordled” Gen 17:4-8:

Aleppo Haran Mari Babylon Ur Zoan Shechem Bethel Beersheba Terah takes Abram, Sarai, and Lot from Ur to Haran – Gen 11:31 Terah takes Abram, Sarai, and Lot from Ur to Haran – Gen 11:31 God tells Abram to go to Canaan (75 yrs old) – Gen 12:1 God tells Abram to go to Canaan (75 yrs old) – Gen 12:1 Abram goes to Egypt (famine in Canaan) – Gen 12:5-10 Abram goes to Egypt (famine in Canaan) – Gen 12:5-10 Abram returns from Egypt to Canaan – Gen 13:1 Abram returns from Egypt to Canaan – Gen 13:1 Abram: Ur to Canaan

Abram & Lot – Gen 13  Gen 13:5 – Abram & Lot traveled together from Egypt to between Bethel & Ai  Possessions too great to live together.  Needed space for flocks  Herdsmen quarrelling  Separated  Lot chose Jordan valley to the East  Gen 14 – Lot gets into caught between two warring kings and Abram rescues him

Sodom & Gomorrah (& Zoar, Zaboim, Admah)  Gen 19:1-11 – Wickedness of Sodom & Gomorrah (and the other cities in the area)  Gen 19:12-29 – Lot departs the city, but sons-in-law stay  Sodom & Gomorrah  Zaboim & Admah also destroyed  Zoar spared as a refuge  Lot’s wife turns  Why is this story included in the Abraham tale?  How does it help us understand the promise of “in you all families of the earth shall be blessed?”

God Promises a Son  17:16 – “a son BY HER”  17:17 – Abraham’s faithLESSness  Fell on his face and laughed!  Abraham is so faithless he refers to Ishmael  God says, “NO! It shall be Isaac.”  18:12 – Sarah laughed!  So, name him, Isaac or (He Laughs).  This concept of “ Son ” underscores the entire book of Genesis and cannot be overstated.

Like Father Like Son  Read Genesis 26:1-16  God confirms his covenant to Isaac  Lies & Deceit (Abraham and Isaac)  Same Wife/Sister Lie  Same Place (Gerar)  To same King (Abimelech), perhaps son or grandson  V – How did God “punish” Isaac for this lie?  What does this say about the nature of God and his blessings to us?

“I Am with you”  I AM is with us.  Is there anything more comforting?  God appears to Isaac  26:24 - At Beersheba to remind him…  I am the God of your Father…  Fear Not, for I am with you…  …I will multiply your offspring…  Exodus 3:14-17 – to Moses. “I AM WHO I AM”  I am the God of your fathers, A, I, and J  I will bring you out of Egypt

Isaac’s Sons  Isaac is old, dim eyed, and preparing to die.  Given this, was both Isaac’s physical and spiritual eyesight dim?  Do you recall Abraham’s final wish for Isaac?  Find a good wife from his kinsmen  Now it is Isaac’s turn  Gen 26:34-35 – Esau took Hittite wives  Judith, daughter of Beeri & Basemath, daughter of Elon  Made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah? Why?  Can children do the same thing to parents today? If so, how? Hittite artifacts shown at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations at Ankara, Turkey

The Deception  27:5-27:46 – Rebekah & Jacob’s deception  Was it successful?  Consequences Good or Bad?  Isaac: blinded by his traditions, growing dim spiritually, his will was thwarted, 27:37  Esau: cheated out of his blessing 27:38, incited to murder 27:41-42  Jacob: compromised himself spiritually and forced into exile 27:43  Rebekah: loses her child to exile 27:43 Jacob Receives Isaac's Blessing Jusepe de Ribera (1637)

Exile Road  Gen 28 – Bethel ladder dream was a sort of conversion for Jacob  Hebrew “ladder” could also denote a “stair way”  Significance  Confirmation God was with Jacob  Purpose of a ladder or stairway?  Look at John 1:51  28:16 - Jacob understood that God could be with him on earth at that place  Bethel means “House of God” Jacob's Dream, Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael) (1519)

Reunion  27:41 – Why did Jacob originally go into exile in Haran?  33:4 – Esau’s reaction  33:12-20 – Jacob and Esau travel separately  V.15 – Esau offer’s protection but Jacob refuses. Why?  V. 19 – Jacob purchases land at Shechem  V. 20 – Erects alter to honor God

Joseph the Dreamer  Jacob favored Joseph  Created friction in the family  37:5 – Joseph Tells His Dreams  Sheaves of grain  Sun, moon, and stars  37:8-11 – Rebuked by entire family  What does Joseph’s interaction with his family tell us about Joseph?  Do we see God’s hand of providence working throughout?

A Suitable Conclusion  Israel is about to die. Retraces out promises for offspring  Recalls Great Nation promise God made to Israel at Bethel/Luz in 48:4  Recalls Land promise  48:21-22 – How is blessing of land passed on to Joseph and his sons?  Ephraim placed ahead of Manessah  What famous Israelite leader was an Ephraimite? – 1 Chr 7:  48:8-22 – How is the blessing passed from Israel to Joseph?  Via adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh  Why not bless Joseph?
