Health and safety support for staff

A safe environment to work in A safe environment means that the work place has no potential hazards and risks ensuring that the work is safe and it doesn’t affect employees’ health. Also it provides employees with the information, instruction and training they need to do their job safely and without damaging their health. The manager need to monitor and check the workplace regularly and record your findings. The factors that make a environment safe to work in include: A clean work place to prevent cross-contamination Clean and hygienic facilities to the staff such as a clean toilet and staff room area. The work place need to have good ventilation the salon needs to be kept at a bearable temperature. A safe environment to work in applies to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Health Act 2006, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (amended 2003)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) It means that you need to provide protective equipment to your staff protecting them against certain hazards and risks. Making sure you provide them with instructions and training how to use it correctly. PPE can include things like: gloves to protect their hands from products such as hot wax googles as eye protection in case of any dust while filing nails safe shoes with rubber soles that will ground you down in case of any electricity hazards. The manager should consider different size of gloves because people have different sized hands. It applies to The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

Safe equipment/products to work with It means you need to provide your employees with safe equipment and products that do not contain any harmful chemicals so that you do not put them at risk. You have to ensure that ways of storing, transporting or working with dangerous substances is safe and does not damage employees’ health. Also you need to ensure that tools, equipment and machinery are safe and are kept safe in a salon. Certain machines such as steamers produces hot water and can be hot enough to cause burns or scalds Electricity can cause electrical shock and burns. This comes under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
