University Bike Master Plan

University Policy  Bicycle committee recommends that the current policy for bicycles on sidewalks be changed to create a safe transportation link on roadways.  This will allow engineers to consider bikes when planning road improvements.

Definitions  Class 1 (Shared Use Path) A constructed lane on right of way completely separate from motor vehicle rights of way and designated for the exclusive use of non-motorized modes of transportation such as bicycles and pedestrians.  Class 2 (Bike lane) A portion of roadway striped and signed for the semi-exclusive use of bicycles. Turning movements by autos across bicycle lanes are allowed.  Class 3 (Shared roadway) A portion of roadway signed for bicycle use. Bicycles share the right of ways with motor vehicles.

Present Conditions  Current  University policy  Existing bike lanes/Routes Class ll Class lll

Bike Usage  Where are the bikes coming from?  Parking your bike  Problem Intersections

Safety  Driver/Bicyclists education –Pamphlets  Signage –In the middle of campus to alert bikers of “Dead End” bike routes  Bike registration

Integrating into Salt lake green space Map

Suggestions  The new, six-foot high markings feature a bicycle symbol but no bike lane stripes.  The shared lane marking is an effective, flexible alternative to striped bike lanes and can be used to improve cyclist safety and make connections between bike lanes, greenways and bridge paths on streets too narrow for standard five-foot wide bike lanes. Last year, the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic surveyed motorists and cyclists about “shared lane” bike symbols and found that 80% of respondents understood the symbols to mean “share the road” and drive and ride cautiously.
