Using PubMed effectively ILI in a non-profit Research Institution

Library Services Two person operation Main areas of research include Biological Sciences Serving patrons nationwide % of our patron correspondence is done virtually

ILI in our setting Primarily done one on one, project by project Researchers usually have advanced degrees Already have their own developed methodologies to the research process Library Services usually a last resort-NOT GOOD!

Suggested Enhancements ILI using a social constructivist style which assumes :  participants come into the course with a preconceived notion of the subject matter  they are constantly reinventing the way in which they interact with the subject matter depending on the situation at hand.  I would attempt to base my “brownbag” lectures around subjects already pertinent to the attendees’ research projects. A series of brown bags both in a physical and virtual space which touch on topics surrounding the latest advances in collaborative tools and frequently used research tools.  Focus should be on Web 2.0 only insomuch as it is useful for our users’ research outcomes.

NLM’s PubMed What is it? PubMed developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). National Library of Medicine PubMed provides access to citations from biomedical literature, including MEDLINE. PubMed Links to full text via LinkOut filters.

Goals 1. more productive research outcomes for the employees we serve through making them more aware of resources which may inform their unique contract assignments and make their time more productive and more efficient, as most of their work is time sensitive. 2. not only an introduction to new resources, but the effective melding of new with previously established personal information management techniques. Setting up Creation of personalized results filters While our patrons are regular users of PubMed, not many of then know how to incorporate these features for more effective results. Setting up Creation of personalized results filters While our patrons are regular users of PubMed, not many of then know how to incorporate these features for more effective results.

MyNCBI Two Ways to Get Started…. Make sure it’s easy to remember!

Filters 3 major types of filters  Linkout: results separated by full text providers, libraries, and other outside resources.  Links: items which have additional resources in other Entrez databases.  Properties : Over 70 filters highlighting properties of research or specific publications.

Our Linkout Filter Feel free to take a minute and look at the other databases available. Make sure to select PubMed! Remember you can have up to five filters at a time! Select Browse-Linkout- Libraries-BSRC

Your Choice… Pick at least one more filter I’ll be available for help or any questions that come to mind. Remember 5 max. but you can always change them as you require via MyNCBI.

A series of brownbags…. The lesson would take place over a three week period with one class per week. 45 minutes to 1 hour per session. Each round of classes would max out at 6 participants.

Supplementary materials Discussion Board for classes on the library site. Open continuously through the various rounds so previous and current students can learn from and with each other. A section on the library site with links to Discussion, handouts (exercises and factsheets), NCBI internet resources, and prerecorded tutorials for review. Online resources would also help in creation of e-sessions for irregular hours patrons and those who are offsite. Additionally “LiveMeetings” could be scheduled for offsite patrons as well.
