Introduction Founded in 2004, the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) is a registered non-profit organisation with two complimentary objectives:  Player Welfare:  Supporting the needs and interests of ex-players  Player Development:  Developing rugby at grassroots level Fully endorsed and supported by the South African Rugby Union.

The Vuka Story  Vuka means re-awakening.  Revive rugby in areas where it used to thrive.  Capacity building: Teachers and learners have been trained in IRB coaching, referee and medical courses.  Partnership with Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to introduce life skills training.  The COOLPLAY program equips coaches with the technical rugby skills & life skills.  Currently across the Cape Flats and beyond school teams play league every Wednesday.  Over the past five years a number of learners from our Vuka programme enrolled at tertiary institutions.

Vuka Rugby Player Development  Community, schools and club links - Focus on young rugby players who have traditionally been excluded from structured training and programs  Offers mass-participation and access to rugby – Physical Education, community festivals and regular community training sessions.  Establish leagues between participating schools/communities  Social cohesion - inter community teams and competitions  LTPD - Creates pathways to the Springbok jersey for talented players.  Talent Identification and development - A number of players have been selected to Federation elite and talent squads.  Creates opportunities for players to play at best facilities eg. Newlands, City Park, Kings Park, Ellis Park.

Legends Iqhawe u/15 National Week September Provincial rugby union teams – 200 boys. Fully endorsed and supported by SARU. Creating pathways to Federation Elite Squads for non-traditional rugby playing schools. Creating platform to showcase talent.

The Vuka Way  Establish the Vuka vision in all 14 unions.  Continue to up-skill teachers and learners.  Create opportunities for talented players.  Partner with Varsity Rugby for rugby bursaries.

Player Welfare Our Legends  Are provincial and international players, coaches, administrators & referees;  Give back to SARLA’s structured projects by participating in coaching clinics, golf days, dinners & charitable events to raise funds for charities and other underprivileged communities;  Have access to International Rugby Board (IRB ) certification – up-skilling themselves and thereby promoting their own welfare and opening up employment opportunities as coaches at all levels;  Participate in local and international tours playing exhibition games and promoting the game of rugby;  Assist to keep learners off the street and out of gangs and drugs, hence contributing to a healthy and stable South Africa.

Player Welfare Deliverables  Coaching Clinics:  “Passing on Passion” – Introduction to Rugby:  Since 2004 over learners have benefitted from SARLA training coaching clinics  Golf Days / Dinners / Cycle Tours / Rugby Tours:  sponsors get the opportunity to meet, take part and to spend time with our legends at these special events;

We invite you to become part of SARLA by investing in a better future - not only for the thousands of kids that participate in our programmes but also for a better South Africa. Thank You!
