ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM(ABS) By- Khan Arshad Habib (Mechanical Engineering) An Advanced Braking Technology ME-5C (Final Year)

OVERVIEW  Introduction to brakes  Types of Brakes  Materials used in Brakes  Introduction to ABS  History of ABS  Aim of ABS  Main components of ABS  Construction  Working principle  Effectiveness  Braking distance  Application in Indian Automobiles

INTRODUCTION TO BRAKES  It is one of the most important device.  Used to retard or stop the vehicle.  Kinetic energy translated to heat energy.  Kinetic energy increases with the square of the velocity.  By K.E=1/2mv ²

TYPES OF BRAKES Hydraulic brakesElectric BrakesMechanical Brakes

MATERIALS USED FOR BRAKES  Cast Iron on Cast Iron.  Bronze on Cast Iron.  Steel on Cast Iron.  Wood on Cast Iron.  Leather on metal.  Asbestos on metal.  Etc.

INTRODUCTION TO ABS  It is the safety innovation introduced to the automotive industry.  It is a system that prevents wheel from locking while braking.  It is available as standard on almost all the new cars

History of ABS  ABS was first developed for AirCraft in  By French Automobile & Aircraft Pioneer GABRAEL VOISIN.  The German Companies BOSCH & Mercedes-Benz pioneered the first electronic version for use on Mercedes-Benz Cars in  In 1953 BMW became the World’s first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce ABS. ABS brakes on a BMW motorcycle

AIM OF ABS  It is also known as Anti-Skid Braking System.  The aim is to maximize braking while preventing the wheels from locking & skidding.

MAIN COMPONENT OF ABS  Some Wheel Speed Sensors  Brake Calipers  A Hydraulic Motor  Some Pressure release valves  A quick thinking computer (Control Module) An ABS system consists of the following components:

CONSTRUCTION  A-Wheel Speed Sensor  B-ABS control Module  C-pressure Release Valves  D-Brake caliper

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF ABS  It consists of an electronic controller.  The electronic unit constantly monitors the speed of the wheel.

TYPES OF ABS  Four-channel, Four Sensor  Three-Channel, Three sensors  One-Channel, one Sensor

EFFECTIVENESS  In 2003 Australian study by Monash University Accident Research Centre found that ABS:  Reduced the risk of multiple vehicle crashes by 18%.

BRAKING DISTANCE 80 KM/HR ROAD CONDITIONWITHOUT ABSWITH ABS DRY PAVEMENT45m32m SNOW53m64m ICE255m404m A june 1999 NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) study found that:

APPLICATION IN INDIAN AUTOMOBILES  Maruti Suzuki Swift  Maruti Suzuki RITZ  Skoda Superb  Honda Accord  Honda City  Hyundai Verna  Hyundai i20  Etc.

Q & A SESSION.  Any query or doubt, most wellcome.  Questions should be related to the Topic.
