The Trojan War An Introduction

How It All Started Overpopulation  Zeus and Gaia decide there needs to be a war. Zeus falls in love with Thetis. – A prophecy is made. Zeus decides to marry Thetis off to Peleus.

The Wedding and the Apple Problem – Do you invite Eris? Eris throws the golden apple into the crowd. – Kallisti – For the Fairest – Hera, Athena, or Aphrodite?

Paris of Troy King Priam of Troy and his wife Hecuba are going to have a baby. Hecuba has a dream. Paris is exposed on a mountainside and adopted by a shepherd.

The Judgment of Paris Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite go to Paris to judge which one of them is fairest. They all make him promises. – Hera – most powerful man in the world. – Athena – wisest man in the world. – Aphrodite – marry the most beautiful woman in the world. Which would you choose?

The Judgment of Paris

Paris chooses Aphrodite. Hera and Athena are MAD! Paris is reunited with his family and Hecuba’s dream is completely ignored. – Foreshadowing? Priam makes Paris the ambassador to Sparta.

Helen of Sparta Helen is semi-divine – daughter of Zeus and Leda. The Suitors’ Oath Helen is married to Menelaus, King of Sparta. What do you think happens next?

“The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships” Paris is staying with Menelaus and Helen in Sparta. He falls in love with Helen and abducts her back to Troy. The Suitors must fulfill their oath.

Achilles (Greek ) vs. Hector (Trojan) Hector killed Achilles’ best friend, and took his armor. – This was a huge offense to Achilles. Achilles swore to kill Hector in revenge. After he killed Hector, he dragged his body from his chariot and refused to return his body for burial. – This was a huge offense to Hector and the rules of war.

Achilles vs. Paris Paris wants to avenge his brother, by killing Achilles. – The gods also want Achilles’ to die, so they help Paris. Paris shoots Achilles’ through his heel with a poisoned arrow. – Where we get the term “Achilles’ Heel.” Paris was killed because of this.

The Trojan Horse Odysseus comes up with a plan to final defeat Troy. They build a giant, hollow wooden horse. – The Greeks leave a note with it, saying that they had returned to Greece. – A few Greek warriors hide inside the horse, while the rest hide outside the city.

The Trojan Horse The Trojans bring the horse into the city. – Cassandra and Laocoön warned against this. Once all the Trojans are asleep, the Greeks inside the horse climb out, and let the rest of the Greeks into the city. – The city of Troy is completely destroyed. – Hecuba’s dream came true!!!
