Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education 1 Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM)

Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education What is Dynamic Learning Maps? The DLM™ project is guided by the core belief that all students should have access to challenging grade-level content. –Structure of the test will allow students to show what they know and can do The DLM™ system is designed to map a student’s learning throughout the year. –Tasks are embedded in day-to-day instruction –An end of year summative assessment 2

Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education Common Core Essential Elements Specific statements of the content and skills Linked to the CCSS Provide links between the CCSS and grade specific expectations 3 (CCEE)

Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education DLM Test Features: Instructionally Embedded Assessment Embedded items and tasks are given to a student and the student’s learning is mapped throughout the year. –Testing and teaching happen at the same time. –Teachers can see what students know and can change instruction to better support student learning. 4

Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education DLM Test Features: Accessibility Tests will be flexible enough to accept a variety of responses, such as: –Keyboard-entered responses –Drag-and-drop responses that use the mouse to sort or label –Responses using touch-screen technology (when available) The system will be compatible with a variety of assistive technologies 6

Division of Student AssessmentIllinois State Board of Education DLM Field Test Field Test 1: January 15th – 31st –Two Essential Elements assessed per grade and content area. All students are assessed on both EEs, at levels of complexity that target the student. –Focus: Testing initialization into the map using data from the pilot; testing paths within the map; assessing opportunity to learn. Field Test 2: March 17th – April 11th –Five to ten Essential Elements assessed per grade and content area. Each student is assessed on two EEs per content area, at levels of complexity that target the student. –Focus: Testing first version of dynamic routing from one testlet to the next; trying new interface for teachers to select testlets from a limited range of options; offering first version of a report for teachers. Field Test 3: May 1st – end of academic year –Five to ten Essential Elements assessed per grade and content area. Each student assessed on two EEs per content area, at levels of complexity that target the student. –Focus: Trying new function that allows the teacher to adjust a recommendation made by the system; offering a usage report for teachers. 7
