Millennium development goal: Combating the spread of HIV/Aids

Millennium development goals: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger 2. Achieve universal primary education 3. Promote gender equality and empower women 4. Reduce child mortality 5. Improve maternal health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases 7. Ensure environmental suitability 8. Develop a global partnership for development

By Mapping the rate the spread of the disease we can see witch areas have or have not improved. If we can see significant improvement or a rapid spread in an area of a map and cross check the data with what changes have been made in an that area we can see what has worked in that area and those who haven't. With this information mapped out we have a visual on the areas of greatest need. We can also use GIS to cross-check the Spread of HIV/AIDS with the affect it has had on the other MDG.

How dose Aids impact on the MDGS? 1. On the continent of Africa the UNAIDS estimated that GDP will be reduced by almost one- third due to loss of able workers and heads of households. 2. Loss of human capital, teachers in particular, due to HIV/AIDS, has resulted in inadequate teaching staff. 1. Hunger and poverty make people vulnerable to HIV infection. People in poverty that are living with HIV can not afford food or antiviral drugs that would combat the disease 2. In terms of HIV prevention Education is key. Education increases awareness and empowerment over the disease. How do the MDGs impact AIDS?

How does AIDS Impact MGDS? 3. HIV and AIDS has adversely affected girls’ education and has increased their vulnerability. Women tend to bear more burden of the HIV epidemic and care for the 4. Life expectancy and infant mortality has been exacerbated by HIV/AIDS with serious demographic and economic 5. Violence against women has been used as a weapon of war, with rape being used for “deliberate spread of AIDS” resulting in young women being three times more likely to be living with HIV/AIDS than young men. HIV/AIDS awareness is the lowest among young women in the poorest families. These young women are statistically more likely to have to resort to prostitution to provide for there family especially once parents of head of households die from AIDS. How do MDGs Impact on AIDS?

In sub-Saharan Africa the annual new infections in 2011 reached 1.7 million people, including 300,000 children. This is 21 percent lower than the 1997 peak and 15 percent lower than in More people than ever are living with HIV; in 2011, an estimated 34.2 million were living with HIV, up 17 per cent from This is due to the continued large numbers of new infections along with a growing access to life-saving antiretroviral drugs in more recent years 57% of HIV-positive pregnant women received treatment to prevent HIV transmission to their child in The number of people dying of AIDS- related causes fell to 1.7 million in 2011, a decline of 24% since the peak in 2005

This map shows the spread of HIV/AIDS since the disease first showed up in Africa to its peak.

At the end of 2011, an estimated 8 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy for HIV or AIDS in low- and middle- income countries, up from 6.6 million people in 2010 and up from just in million total AIDS deaths [4] 33 million people currently living with HIV or AIDs [6] 17.5 million children orphaned [4-5]
