Pregnancy
Key Parts Placenta - attached to the uterus and allows materials to pass between the mother and foetus Umbilical cord - carries blood between the foetus and the placenta Amnion - the bag which surrounds the foetus (contains amniotic fluid) aiding protection The foetus gets all its materials for growth and development from the mother But - all materials within the mother’s blood can be passed to the developing foetus - including harmful substances such as virus’ or dangerous chemicals This is why smoking not only kills the mum, but also their unborn baby!
Protection What do you think is necessary for a pregnant woman to do / not do to ensure her unborn baby is as healthy as possible? Write down what you think in a ‘do’ and ‘do not’ column
Do! When pregnant, women should: - Eat a greater amount (they are feeding themselves and their baby) and drink enough fluids Get plenty of rest / sleep Get advice from medical professionals about medicated drugs they are taking
Do not! When pregnant, women should not: - Smoke! Take illegal drugs Work to hard Diet Undertake strenuous exercise Get stressed!
