1. The students should be able to describe the effects that the Boston Tea Party had on the revolution of our country. 2. The student will be able to compare the Loyalists and Patriots views on this event.

 French and Indian war left Britain in great debt  British thought the best way to gain money back would be to increase taxes on the colonies.  New taxes were put on the colonists, like the Townshend Acts  Townshend Acts angered the colonists

 Parliament finally repealed the Townshend Acts, except for the duty on tea, for matter of principle  Colonists drink smuggled tea instead  Caused the East India Company to almost go bankrupt

 Britain passed the Tea Act  The Tea Act made East India Company sell tea at very low prices, even lower than smuggled tea’s prices!  British reasoned that colonists would be willing to pay the tax if the cost was very low

 When three ships of tea landed in Boston, the colonists were furious.  7,000 locals came down to Griffin’s wharf, where the ships were docked in Boston  The morning of this happening, the colonists had held a meeting at the Old South Meeting House and the people agreed that the tea ships would leave the harbor without payment of any duty.

 The message was taken to the Collector of Customs and it was reported back that he REFUSED!  This caused a HUGE uproar!

 Now evening time, 200 men gathered on a hill nearby, disguised as Native Americans.  They swiftly descended upon the boats yelling war chants  342 chests of tea were cracked upon by hatchets and dumped into the harbor waters as an angry crowd cheered them on.

 Britain passed the Intolerable Acts  The port of Boston was closed until the colonists paid for tea.  Town meetings were forbiddean, except for 1 a year  If a British official was arrested, they would go to Britain for court  Even had a stronger Quartering Act

 This affected the Bostonians very much.  The colonies stepped it up and started to help out by sending supplies and stuff to help.  Here we come to the Nationalism of our country…

 Definition: Devotion and loyality to one’s own nation; patriotism  If the colonies weren’t loyal to each other they wouldn’t have…  Sent supplies  Banded together and fought for their rights
