Tennessee Valley Authority

History of TVA Slogan- “TVA, electricity for all!” President Franklin Roosevelt signed the TVA Act on May 18, 1933. Today, TVA is the largest public power company, proving power to over 9 million customers in the Tennessee Valley. Power comes from dams providing hydroelectric power, fossil fuel plants, nuclear power plants, wind turbines, and solar panels. TVA was set up in 1933 as an agency supported by America’s tax dollars.

Who started TVA, and why? In 1933, Tennessee Valley looked pretty rough compared to the rest of the U.S. It was very dangerous to travel on the TN River. Many of the people in the Valley had no electricity and it was the Great Depression. Many families could not grow food and many didn’t have jobs , so they had nothing to eat. Pres. Franklin Roosevelt wanted the people in TN to be healthy. In order to do this, he signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act. The new agency was asked to tackle important problems facing the Valley, such as flooding, providing electricity to homes and businesses, and replanting forests. Other TVA responsibilities written in the act included improving travel on the Tennessee River and helping develop the region's business and farming.
