Adams as President ► Respected but unpopular ► Maintained peace despite calls for war ► Built a large U.S. Navy

X Y Z Affair (1798) ► French privateers attacking U.S. ships ► Adams sent diplomats to Paris to improve relations between our countries ► Diplomats were told that France would not negotiate unless the U.S. paid a bribe & $12 million loan! ► Federalists call for war, Adams pursues peace
