Strategies to Recruit and Retain Traditionally Underrepresented Students in STEM o STEM Summer Camp for Girls held at the Engineering and Aerospace Sciences Academy, located in the Evergreen Space Museum. The camp serves 75 girls and features project-based learning, including Wildlife monitoring Paper engineering Newton’s Laws o STEM Center course exclusively for middle school girls o Migrant Summer Camp with STEM-focused teaching and learning

MSP Funded Project Featuring o STEM Summer Professional Development Workshop (32 hours) o Job-embedded Instructional Coaching in math, science, and STEM o Four STEM problem- based units (40 lesson plans) o Structured, Collaborative, problem- based Learning

MSP Funded Project Goals 1.Increase teacher knowledge and skills 2.Increase student interest in and preparation for mathematics, science, and STEM careers 3.Increase student achievement in mathematics, science, reading, and writing

MSP Funded Project Case Study Approach September-Corn (variables math and science) December-Photosynthesis & Respiration (graphing) March-Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (quadratics) May- Clover Cyanogenesis (statistics) “I didn’t understand how math related to science and it seemed too complication, but once you start doing it, it’s easier to understand the connection.”– MHS 9 th grader

o Summer STEM Institute provided in partnership with Pacific University o Job-imbedded instructional coaching focused on research- based instructional strategies and content pedagogy o Demonstration lessons and modeling o Rigorous Curriculum Design o Data Teams/Professional Learning Communities o Project Leadership Team: Project Director, Instructional Coaches, Math Teacher-Leader and Science Teacher-Leader “I think this project is kinda cool because it links both of them (math and science). It helps me learn better because I have 2 classes focused on the same concepts, so if I don’t understand a concept in on class, the other one helps me to understand it.” – MHS 9 th grader “I’m not the best at science, but getting to see it again in math helps clarify it up for me.” – MHS 9 th grader

EASA is a McMinnville High School 9 th -12 th grade Career Pathway program located at the Evergreen Space Museum. EASA is a hands-on program that prepares students for college and careers in engineering, technology, and science. The STEM-intensive EASA curriculum, some of which is PLTW, is focused on creative and practical problem solving using industry-standard equipment and technology. EASA offers dual high school/college credit and a complete four-year instructional sequence in engineering topics.
