Tropical Rainforest **Web-quest for Kindergarten & will be done w/ an adult. By: Kristin Castelli

Introduction Welcome to the Tropical Rainforest. Today we are going to go on an exciting journey through the rainforest. We are going to see a lot of different types of animals and plants as we make our way through the rainforest. We will be seeing the different levels of the rainforest and the animals that live in the different levels. So, strap on your hiking gear, and lets get the journey started.

Task You will look at all the different animals and the different levels of the rainforest on the PowerPoint. Once you have completed the PowerPoint, your group will draw the different levels of the rainforest, and the animals that you saw in the PowerPoint on a large piece of paper that will be displayed in the classroom. Roles of the students: ~ One will draw the Emergent and Canopy levels. ~ One will draw the Understory level. ~ Each one of students will draw an animal that belongs in the rainforest.

Process 1.Look at all of the pictures of the different animals in the rainforest. 2.Read the little information about each animal. 3.Once you are done going through the pictures, find and remember your favorite animal and where it lives. 4.Draw a picture of the different levels of the rainforest, (on one side of the paper.) 5.On the other side of the paper, draw a picture of your favorite animal and the level of the rainforest that animal lives in.

Blue and Gold Macaw -The crown of his head is green and its belly is golden yellow and have long tails. - The Blue and Gold Macaw eats nuts, seeds, and fruit.

-The toucan lives in canopy of the rain forest. - The toucan has a very big bill. Its bill is rainbow colored. -It has blue legs and feet. -It colors help it hide from predators. Toucan

-In the Rainforest they live at the top of the tallest trees, which is in the Emergent layer (emergent layer is high-up above the canopy.) - The Blue Morpho has blue wings with a brown border. -The Blue Morpho’s colors blend in it’s surroundings. Blue Morpho Butterfly

- Howler monkeys have brown, black, or reddish fur and blend in with the trees. - The Howler monkey eats fruit, leaves, flowers, and nuts. Howler Monkey

Jaguar -It is black with black spots called rosettes and has a muscular body. - It eats turtles and Gray Snappers. - It is the king of roaring cats.

Sloth -Sloth’s hair is specially designed to allow algae to effectively colonize. -Sloth’s are covered with tan to greyish brown hairs. - The sloth primarily eats leaves and fruit.

Emergent Level -Emergent layer of the rainforest is a layer of trees stretching 50 to 60 meters above the forest floor.

Canopy -This layer supports most of the rainforest animals. -The canopy offers such an abundance of shelter that many of the animals living in this layer never need to descend from it. -Insects hum and nibble on plants, reptiles slither along the branches and trunks of trees, monkeys chatter back and forth as they swing through the branches, and brightly colored birds dart among leaves.

Understory - Made up of the trunks of canopy trees, shrubs, plants and smaller trees. - Many of the plants living in this level have adapted to growing in the shade and don't need much light.

EMERGENTS: Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects. CANOPY: The upper parts of the trees. This leafy environment is full of life in a tropical rainforest and includes: insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, and more. UNDERSTORY: A dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground. FOREST FLOOR: Teeming with animal life, especially insects. The largest animals in the rainforest generally live here.

Evaluation  Individual rubric for the drawing of the rainforest AND for the picture of your favorite animal and the level of the rainforest it lives in. 123 Drawing Picture has trees, no animal, and does not have any real levels. Picture has the different levels and an animal, but animal is not in the correct level of the rainforest. Picture has the different levels and the animal in the correct level of the rainforest.

Group interaction Students did not work together as a group. Only one person drew the whole picture. Students worked together as a group, but only a few students drew the picture. (other students were just sitting there.) Students worked together as a group and everyone had a turn in drawing the picture and did their part of the task.

Teacher’s Page You will be reading all of the little captions on each of the pages for the students. Your students are kindergartners and are not able to read by themselves yet. The students before hand will do a KWL chart to see what all the students already know about the rainforest. The students will then move on to view the PowerPoint presentation to further their knowledge of the rainforest, i.e. The animals that live in the rainforest and where they live and the different level of the rainforest. Materials that will be needed for this WebQuest are: -Large piece of construction paper (white) -Computers with internet connection -Crayons You will also need a teacher’s aid or parent to go through the WebQuest with the students to help them read the captions and directions.
